One Year Later: The Columbia Disaster Remembered
Radio Special Airs on NPR News 91

NPR News 91 will take a look back one year after the Space Shuttle Columbia accident with a one-hour documentary. Columbia Remembered ... Atlantis, Go For Launch looks back on the shuttle tragedy and looks ahead to the planned flight of Space Shuttle Atlantis. The program will air at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, and 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31.

Pat Duggins, NPR correspondent and news director of Orlando-based WMFE-FM, will host the program. Listeners will hear from the Columbia astronauts and re-live the tragic loss of the shuttle. They will get the inside story of the recovery of the shuttles flight data recorder from the man who found it and meet the astronauts scheduled to blast off aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis during the first mission to follow Columbia. Listeners will go inside the hangar where the shuttles wreckage was kept, on the very day NASA engineers released the information about the breech that destroyed the shuttle.

The documentary looks ahead with a visit to the Orbiter Processing Facility where Atlantis is being prepared for launch. Engineers there say they wont be able to relax until the shuttle finishes its mission and returns safely to Earth. Also, the program visits Elmira, N.Y. hometown of Atlantis commander Eileen Collins. Residents there consider Collins a homegrown hero and express their concerns about having Collins aboard the shuttle after the tragic loss of seven astronauts.

The program wraps up with a look at the future of NASA and asks the question, Is the space program worth the money and risk to human life? Central Florida residents get a chance to speak out on this issue.

NPR News 91 can be heard on KBSX, 91.5 FM, Boise; KBSY, 88.5 FM, Burley, KBSJ, 91.3 FM, Jackpot and KBSQ, 90.7 FM, McCall. Boise State Radio is a listener-supported service of Boise State University. Additional information is available at http://radio.boisestate.edu.
