Boise State University has set yet
another spring record with a 10th-day headcount of 17,890, which
is an increase of 145 students, or 1 percent, over last spring.
Furthermore, not only are more students
attending Boise State this spring than last spring, on the average
they are taking more classes. The university’s full-time
equivalent, based on the number of credit hours students are
taking, jumped 3 percent, to 12,818. The increase is a result of
more students attending full time rather than part time.
The enrollment figures reflect a
manageable pace of growth, said Mark Wheeler, dean of enrollment
services. The university increased admissions standards last fall
and will increase them again this fall to keep enrollment in
concert with its resources, he added
The
increase in standards is also making a difference in how well the
freshman class performs. Of those admitted in fall 2003, more
finished the semester in good academic standing and more continued
into the spring semester than in previous years.
Most of the spring 2004 enrollment
growth occurred at the undergraduate level. Undergraduate
headcount was up 2 percent and credit hours were up 4 percent.
The enrollment trend that continues to
stand out over others is the growth of full-time students, said
Wheeler. Over the past five years, Boise State has seen a 28
percent increase in the number of full-time students, which is
more than double its overall rate of growth.
