Put Pep In Your Step With Campus Recreation Walking Clinics

Ready, set, go — and they’re off. Who? The fitness walkers. Campus Recreation (The REC) has begun spring semester walking clinics. Walking is an awesome way to challenge the body with a genuine cardio workout.

“Walking is the number one recreational activity in the country right now,” said Lisa Stuppy, assistant director for fitness.

The REC provides two types of walking clinics: basic and interval. All levels are welcome at the basic clinics. Participants learn the basics of fitness walking, including proper body positions, appropriate speed and intensity levels, and tips on footwear.

Learning basic fitness walking techniques is “the best way to get the most out of your current walking pace,” said Stuppy.

The interval walking clinic is for those who are ready to move to the next level. Learn how to increase walking speed to increase heart rate and adjust intensity for more variety including lunges, curb-hops, light jogs, crunches and more.

“If you have been walking for a while, come to the interval walking clinic and spice things up,” said Stuppy

Join the “walking warriors” in The REC lobby from noon-12:45 p.m. Feb. 11, March 10, and April 7 for basic and Feb. 25, March 31, and April 21 for interval.  All walking clinics are free of charge to both REC and non-REC members.

The REC has supported this cardio option since fall 2001. Since the new REC building would not open until fall 2002, Campus Recreation “wanted to start some fitness programming that did not rely on the new facility being open,” said Stuppy. She said walking clinics were the perfect solution because, “You can walk anywhere.”
