The Boise
State University School of Social Work and the National
Association of Social Workers-Idaho Chapter will host Legislative
Advocacy Day 2004 on Feb. 17-18 in Boise. Legislative Advocacy Day
will offer instruction to university students and practicing
social workers on how to become more informed and effective
lobbyists. Approximately 150-175 students and practicing social
workers from across Idaho are expected to attend and are
encouraged to bring cards and letters to be delivered to
legislators.
Political scientist Stephanie Witt, associate vice president of
Academic Affairs at Boise State, will deliver the keynote address
on �The Role of a Citizen in a Democracy.� Other events include
instruction on how to access legislative information, discussion
of significant and timely legislative topics, training on citizen
lobbying techniques, the opportunity to observe legislative
committee meetings and information related to advocating at the
city and county levels. In addition, a proclamation from the
Statehouse steps will recognize March as National Social Work
Month in Idaho. For more information on events, visit

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW), founded in
1955, is the largest membership organization of professional
social workers in the world, with more than 150,000 members. There
are 56 chapters in the United States and abroad. The NASW-Idaho
Chapter�s mission is to provide leadership direction to promote
the social work profession, exemplify and support ethical and
knowledgeable practice and positively impact social justice for
all Idaho citizens.
Legislative Advocacy Day 2004 is organized by a committee of
undergraduate and graduate Boise State social work students,
chaired by second year MSW student Colleen Jensen of Boise.
Members of the committee include Donna Clegg (Boise), Tiffany
Darrington (Boise), Sheryl Ford (Twin Falls), LuAnne Hormel
(Bliss), Bonita Campbell (Caldwell), Melody Kerner (Wendell),
Carolyn Eardley (Nampa), Sunny Reed (Boise) and Iris Hunter
(Boise). Boise State professor of social work William Simpson
Whitaker is mentoring the students.
