The Boise State University School of Social Work and the National Association of Social Workers-Idaho Chapter will host Legislative Advocacy Day 2004 on Feb. 17-18 in Boise. Legislative Advocacy Day will offer instruction to university students and practicing social workers on how to become more informed and effective lobbyists. Approximately 150-175 students and practicing social workers from across Idaho are expected to attend and are encouraged to bring cards and letters to be delivered to legislators.

Political scientist Stephanie Witt, associate vice president of Academic Affairs at Boise State, will deliver the keynote address on The Role of a Citizen in a Democracy. Other events include instruction on how to access legislative information, discussion of significant and timely legislative topics, training on citizen lobbying techniques, the opportunity to observe legislative committee meetings and information related to advocating at the city and county levels. In addition, a proclamation from the Statehouse steps will recognize March as National Social Work Month in Idaho. For more information on events, visit www.naswidaho.org.

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW), founded in 1955, is the largest membership organization of professional social workers in the world, with more than 150,000 members. There are 56 chapters in the United States and abroad. The NASW-Idaho Chapters mission is to provide leadership direction to promote the social work profession, exemplify and support ethical and knowledgeable practice and positively impact social justice for all Idaho citizens.

Legislative Advocacy Day 2004 is organized by a committee of undergraduate and graduate Boise State social work students, chaired by second year MSW student Colleen Jensen of Boise. Members of the committee include Donna Clegg (Boise), Tiffany Darrington (Boise), Sheryl Ford (Twin Falls), LuAnne Hormel (Bliss), Bonita Campbell (Caldwell), Melody Kerner (Wendell), Carolyn Eardley (Nampa), Sunny Reed (Boise) and Iris Hunter (Boise).
