Boise State Celebrates New
President, 30 Years As A University

Boise State
University will celebrate the installation of new president Bob
Kustra and 30 years as a university with a week of exhibits,
discussions, panels and performances from Feb. 21-28, The
community is invited to join in many of the activities.
Boise State was founded as a junior college in 1932 and became
a state college in 1969. In 1974, then-Governor Cecil Andrus
signed a bill changing the name to Boise State University,
solidifying Boise State’s importance in the state’s education
system.
Activities open to the public include
Feb. 21
* Service Saturday. Volunteer Services Board coordinates a morning
of community service projects. Participants should meet at 9 a.m.
at the Student Union Dining Room. Call 426-1223 for more
information.
* International Food, Song and Dance Festival. Presented by the
International Student Association and International Programs
Office, this is a popular perennial event. 6 p.m. in the Student
Union Jordan Ballroom. Tickets, available through Select-a-Seat
after Monday, Feb. 9, are $12 for adults, $8 for children under 12
and students with ID. A table for eight can be purchased for $85
through the International Programs Office. Call 426-3652 for more
information.
Feb. 25
* Professors of the Year Reception. Boise State will recognize
its history of teaching excellence with a reception honoring the
eight outstanding teachers selected as Idaho Professors of the
Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
4-5:30 p.m. in the Student Union Jordan C Ballroom. Call
426-1577 for more information.
Feb. 26
* College of Engineering Open House. 5-7 p.m. at the
Engineering & Technology Building, MEC and Harry Morrison
Laboratory.
* Panel discussion and audience Q&A on “Air Quality in the
Treasure Valley.” 7-8:30
p.m. at the Student Union Barnwell Room. Sponsored by the
College of Health Sciences.
* “Future of Work,” lecture by James Ware, co-founder of the
Work Design Collaborative and the Future of Work Program. 2 p.m.
at the Special Events Center. Sponsored by the College of
Business and Economics.
Feb. 27
* Presidential Installation. 10 a.m. at the Student Union
Jordan Ballroom.
* Philosophy Speakers Series, Professor Mark Heller, Southern
Methodist University, “How to Lose Your Leg … Without Paradox.”
3:40 p.m. in Room 110 of the Education Building. Sponsored by
Boise State Philosophy Club and philosophy department.
* Exhibit titled “New York Society of Illustrators Annual
Exhibition” and discussion of work on display by Boise State
associate art professor and noted children’s book illustrator
Bill Carman, 4-6 p.m. in the Hemingway Western Studies Center,
Gallery 2.
Feb. 28
* Step Afrika! This performance group highlights the history of
African American dance. Based in Washington, D.C., Step Afrika! is
the American arm of the historical Step Afrika! International
Cultural Festivals in Soweto, South Africa. 7 p.m. in the Special
Events Center. Tickets are $5 for Boise State students, faculty
and staff and $10 general through Select-a-Seat. Presented by
Student Programs Board. Call 426-1223 for more information.
