Engineering Banquet Features Speaker on Sustainable Energy - Feb. 23

Could a power grid blackout like the one that hit the East coast last summer happen in the West? Can sugar beets really be used as a source of bioenergy to produce electricity? Is hydroelectric power abundant enough that Idaho residents are assured a stable electricity supply as the state and economy grow?

These questions will be some of the ideas discussed at a presentation titled Electricity in the United States: Stable and Sustainable? by Energy Strategies Group consultant Pike Teinert. He will speak at an Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) banquet at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 23, in the Student Union Lookout Room at Boise State University.

Hosted by the Boise section of IEEE and the Boise State student section, the banquet is open to the general public and will include dinner, an award ceremony and Teinerts presentation. A special award will recognize Hewlett Packard for its ongoing support of IEEE and Boises engineering community.

Admission is $20 for the general public, $15 for IEEE members and their guests, and $7.50 for students. Doors open at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. For dinner reservations, please R.S.V.P. by Feb. 16 to the IEEE Web site at boise.computer.org/boi_banquet_2004.htm or to Boise State electrical engineering professor Elisa Barney Smith at 426-2214.

Admission to only the awards presentation and speech at 7 p.m. is $5 at the door; no advance reservation is required.

In discussing the future of the U.S. energy system, Teinert will draw on his 30 years of experience in the electric energy industry, in positions ranging from design engineer to vice president. He worked with some of Americas largest energy providers the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Southern Company and Texas Utilities. He will discuss existing energy technologies, new technologies such as a self-healing smart grid, up-and-coming production sources such as wind, solar and bioenergy, and regulations and political environment.

Teinert moved to Idaho two years ago so his family could enjoy the states natural amenities and outdoor opportunities. He founded Energy Strategies Group to provide consulting services to power utilities and regulatory agencies to help Idaho and the West move toward a more sustainable and stable energy future.
