Engineering Program Features Speaker on U.S. Energy Grid Feb. 23

Members of the public are welcome to a presentation next week about an issue near and dear to Idahohoans providing adequate energy to sustain Idahos growth. Electricity in the United States: Stable and Sustainable? will be presented by Energy Strategies Group consultant Pike Teinert at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 23, in the Student Union Lookout Room at Boise State University. The program is hosted by the Boise section and Boise State student section of the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers (IEEE). Admission for the program is $5 at the door.

Teinerts talk will touch on questions such as: Could a power grid blackout like the one that hit the East Coast last summer happen in the West? Can sugar beets really be used as a source of bioenergy to produce electricity? Is hydroelectric power abundant enough that Idaho residents are assured a stable electricity supply as the state and economy grow?

The program will follow an IEEE banquet beginning at 6 p.m. that will also include an IEEE awards ceremony and a special award presentation recognizing Hewlett Packard for its ongoing support of IEEE and Boises engineering community. The IEEE is no longer taking dinner reservations for the banquet, but plenty of spaces are still available for the 7 p.m. talk by Teinert.

In discussing the future of the U.S. energy system, Teinert will draw on his 30 years of experience in the electric energy industry, in positions ranging from design engineer to vice president. He worked with some of Americas largest energy providers the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Southern Company and Texas Utilities. He will discuss existing energy technologies, new technologies such as a self-healing smart grid, up-and-coming production sources such as wind, solar and bioenergy, and regulations and political environment.

Teinert moved to Idaho two years ago so his family could enjoy the states natural amenities and outdoor opportunities. He founded Energy Strategies Group to provide consulting services to power utilities and regulatory agencies to help Idaho and the West move toward a more sustainable and stable energy future.
