For the sixth year in a row, Timberline High
School captured the varsity championship title at the southwest
Idaho JETS TEAMS (Junior Engineering Technical Society, Tests of
Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science) competition held at
Boise State University Feb. 28. Boise High won the junior varsity
division.
Students from 24 area high schools flexed their intellectual
muscles to solve science and engineering problems, competing in
teams of eight members. The annual event was hosted by the Boise
State College of Engineering.
The Timberline-B team took first place in the varsity division
with 66 out of a possible 100 points. Team members, who are all
sophomores and juniors, were: Gregory Danner, Ian Viable, Varsha
Iyer, Diana Ye, Brian Huntington, Josh Archibald-Seiffer, Lisa
Reppell and Christoph Hurley.
The Timberline-A varsity team finished second with 60 points.
The team was comprised of Jason Danner, Tim Ashworth, Henry Unrein,
Ciara Huntington, David Li, Devin Allphin, Eric Standley and
Andrea Gains-Germain.
Both Timberline teams are coached by physics teacher Greg
Antonini.
In third place was the Borah-B team, with 58 points posted by
members Geoff Lodal, Bryan Brocksome, Anthony Lock-Smith, Abra
McGillivary, Justin Walters, Shawna Garrison, Mark Gregory and
Edith Medina. Vic Hofstetter coaches the Borah teams.
In the junior varsity competition the Boise High School team of
Lindsay Emerson, Sean Stephens, Jerica Fannin, Alec Williams,
David Folkner, Mir Rahmeen Seyyedy and Corwin Delight took first
place with 46 points. The team was coached by Robert Bellomy.
Borah was the JV runner-up, also with 46 points. The tie was
broken by scoring select questions. The team consisted of Ben
Coryell, Cody Gough, Bobby Freeman, Nicole Hochstrasser, McKenzie
Vaughn, Clara Madsen, Jason Porter and William Gabe.
Finishing third in the JV category was Meridian Charter High
School-A team with members Vikram Patel, Randi Lowe, Brittney
Arnold, Zack Fields, Phil Cottan, Michael Pook, Max McCorkel and
Lee Yarbrough. Paul Fischer coached the team.
A total of 15 varsity and 9 JV teams competed from the
following high schools: Bishop Kelly, Boise, Borah, Capital,
Eagle, Emmett, Kuna, Meridian Charter, Nampa Christian, Nampa and
Timberline.
The competition is part of a national academic program and that
helps prepare students for potential careers in engineering and
the sciences. The TEAMS competition enables high school students
to learn team development skills and then participate as a group
in an engineering problem competition. Problems cover mathematics,
chemistry, physics, biology, visual interpretation of information,
computer applications and reading analysis and interpretation.
Each year more than 20,000 high school students participate at
more than 100 TEAMS sites nationwide. JETS will announce state
rankings after March 22 and national rankings in May and will
recognize the top 10 national teams at both the varsity and junior
varsity level.
