Boise State Blooming With
Musical Fare In April

Boise State ushers in spring with a
refreshing shower of musical fare, from a guitar festival to Flute
Day to the popular Meistersingers. Following is the schedule. For
more information on music department performances, call 426-3980.
— Thursday, April 1, 7 p.m., Morrison Center Recital Hall —
Idaho Tuba Euphonium Recital
This concert features members of
the ITES performing solo literature and chamber works for the tuba
and euphonium. Michael Fischer, ITES founder and BSU music
professor, will begin the recital by performing Arioso Gloria by
Barbara York. Other soloists include Mary Baker, Josh Calkin, Mary
Simpson, Jason Durand, Mark Koob, Geoff Hewitt and Mike Lynch.

Friday, April 2, 7:30 p.m., Morrison Center Recital Hall — Guest
Artist Patricia von Blumroeder
Pianist von Blumroeder presents “Bird Songs,
Music From the Heights,” featuring works from Schumann, Liszt,
Messiaen, Ravel and others. Von Blumroeder studied piano at
University of Idaho as well as the University of Iowa and the
Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, Germany. She has
performed in concerts, radio broadcasts and television
appearances, and at festivals in Paris, Lille, Leipzig, Hamburg,
Salzburg, Fribourg and beyond. Tickets are $5 general, $3 for
seniors and free for students of all ages and Boise state faculty
and staff.

— 14th annual Northwest Guitar Festival
Boise State hosts this regional festival
featuring seven prestigious performers, concerts, workshops and a
competition. This year’s artists include: Croatian prodigy Ana
Vidovic; lutenist Tom Berghan; James Reid, founder of the
Northwest Guitar Festival; Nenad Savic, winner of the 2003
Northwest Guitar Competition; British guitarist Michael Partington;
Tom Baker, director of the Seattle Composers’ Salon; and David
Feingold, head of the music department at Western Washington
University. $125 registration, $50 day pass, $10 per event, $15

— Friday, April 16, Morrison Center Room B-125, 7:30 p.m. —
Percussion Ensemble
The Boise State
Percussion Ensemble presents a spring concert that includes “Cymbalectomy,”
a piece for the “cymbal”-minded; a Brazilian marimba ensemble; and
“Three Shades of ‘C’,” C minor, C Phrygian and C Locrian. Tickets
are $5 general, $3 for seniors and free for students of all ages
and Boise state faculty and staff.

Friday, April 16, Morrison Center Recital Hall, 8 p.m. — Sylvan
Winds Quintet
This concert is presented by the
Boise Chamber Music Society and Boise State University
department of music. A 10:30 a.m. master class the next day in the
Morrison Center Recital Hall, is free and open to the public. The
Sylvan Winds Quintet has been an integral part of New York City’s
cultural offerings for close to three decades, earning both
critical and audience acclaim for its spirited performances and
innovative programming. The group has established a reputation as
one of New York's most versatile chamber music ensembles.

class in the Recital Hall. A disciple of Arnold Jacobs,
Underwood specializes in breathing techniques for all wind
players. Flute professor at SUNY-Purchase and Mannes College of
Music in New York, Underwood has coached major U.S. orchestras
and players of all wind instruments. His innovative and highly
perceptive teaching will benefit all musicians. The class is $15
general and free for all students, IFS members, faculty and
staff. Tickets includes 4:30 p.m. recital. |
— Monday, April 19, Morrison Center Recital Hall, 7:30 p.m. —
Guest Artist Merrie Siegel
University of Idaho flute professor
Siegel presents an evening of flute music. Tickets are $5 general,
$3 for seniors and free for students of all ages and Boise state
faculty and staff.
— Friday and Saturday, April 23 and 24, 4 p.m. — Faculty Artist
Series
Ryan Olsen, tenor, Bogdan di
Moschetti, baritone, and James Cook, piano, perform in the
Morrison Center Recital hall April 23. John Bostron performs on
the organ in the Hemingway Center April 24. Tickets for both
concerts are $5 general, $3 for seniors and free for students of
all ages and Boise state faculty and staff.
— Sunday, April 25, Morrison Center Main Hall, 4
p.m. — University Symphonic Winds
This Symphonic Winds performance features
“Armenian Dances” by Alfred Reed and the regional premiere of
Shafer Mahoney’s “Symphony in E-flat.” Tickets are $5 general, $3
for seniors and free for students of all ages and Boise state
faculty and staff.
— Sunday, April 25, Morrison Center Recital
Hall, 7:30 p.m. — Academy of St. Giles
This early music ensemble consists of Joseph
Baldassarre, lute, viola da gamba, percussion and voice; Laura
Berg, recorder, vielle and voice; Sara Davidson, voice; Kathy
Hurley, recorder and crumhorn; Helene Mock, percussion, recorder
and cornetto; Gail Vaughan, recorder, cornamuse and harpsichord;
and Allyson Wuenschel, vielle. The evening’s repertoire includes
pieces from Landini, Machaut, Donatus, Ghiradello, Corelli and
Susato. Tickets are $5 general, $3 for seniors and free for
students of all ages and Boise state faculty and staff.
— Monday, April 26, Morrison Center Recital Hall, 7 p.m. —
Idaho Flute Society Student Ensembles Concert.
Flute ensemble directors Francesca
Arnone and Jennifer Rhees present Silverwinds (junior high
ensemble), Flute Flight (high school ensemble), and the Boise
State Flute Choir in an evening of flute chamber music. Free.
— Tuesday, April 27, Morrison Center Main Hall, 7:30 p.m. —
Boise State Choirs, “Choral Collage”
Celebrate spring with the Boise
State choirs as they present a potpourri of selections from across
history. Tickets are $5 general, $3 for seniors and free for

— Wednesday, April 28, Mountain View High
School, 2000 S. Millennium Way. 7:30 p.m. — Treasure Valley
Concert Band
The Treasure Valley Concert Band, under the
direction of Boise State music professor Marcellus Brown, performs
“Songs for You,” with the MVHS symphonic band. The evening
includes the premiere of a piece written by Boise State emeritus
professor Melvin Shelton dedicated to wildland firefighters. Free.
— Thursday, April 29, Morrison Center Recital
Hall, 7:30 p.m. — Trombone Choir and Men’s Chorus
The trombone choir will perform a variety of
original and transcribed music for multiple trombones, including a
new arrangement by Boise State trombone professor David Mathie of
“Canzone 3” by 17th century German composer Hans Leo Hassler. The
Men’s Chorus and Trombone Choir will join for “Widerspruch” by
Franz Schubert, arranged by Mathie. Tickets are $5 general, $3 for
seniors and free for students of all ages and Boise state faculty
and staff.

Michael’s Episcopal Cathedral, 518 N. 8th, 7:30 p.m. —
Meistersingers
The Meistersingers, directed by
Boise State music professor Giselle Wyers, present works by Bach,
Brahms, Victoria and living composers. Tickets are $5 general, $3

faculty and staff.
