Boise State Offers A Variety Of Summer Camps For Youth

Each summer, hundreds of elementary through high school-age children hone their diverse skills at Boise State University summer programs. Following is the schedule of activities and camps for 2004. Each sports camp has a different registration deadline, so please call the number listed or check the Web site indicated to confirm the deadline.

June 6-11

Idaho Engineering Science Camp. For students entering ninth or 10th grade. This camp will focus on engineering problems and team-building. $400, includes campus housing. Applications due May 1. Sponsored by Boise State College of Engineering. For application call 426-3764.

June 7-June 11

Chamber Music Camp. Conducted in the Morrison Center, this camp is for students entering junior high and high school. Curriculum includes chamber ensembles, music theory, camp choir, opera theater and master classes for strings, woodwind, percussion, keyboard, brass, vocal, jazz and more. $175 tuition. Housing is $20/day or $100/week, plus meals. Half-day camps will be offered for $85/week. Deadline for application is May 20. Presented by Boise State music department. Call 426-1596 or 426-1421.

June 21-25

Gene Harris Jazz Camp. For instrumentalists entering fifth-12th grade (other grades by audition) who want to learn jazz improvisation, and educators. Educators can receive continuing education credit for $144.60 per credit. Areas of concentration include jazz vocabulary, improvisational theory, history, listening skills, forms, tunes and performance. Presented by Boise State music department. $109, with a $10 discount for participants who also attend the 2004 Chamber Music Camp. Call 426-3099.

June 7-July 9

Boise State University Summer Academy. A five-week, Monday-Friday program including academic enrichment of the elementary curriculum, computer skills, field trips and swimming for a maximum of 60 children entering second through sixth grades. $595. A discount of $35 is given for each additional sibling enrolled. Presented by Boise State Center for School Improvement and Policy Studies. Call 426-2243.

June 7-July 8

Boise State University Middle Level Academy. A five-week, Monday-Thursday adventure/science-based academy for 25 students entering seventh and eighth grades. The program includes mountain biking, hiking and other activities integrated into a curriculum designed to enhance general academic skills. $550, with a discount of $35 given for each additional sibling enrolled. Little Bronco soccer camp. For ages 6-8. Sessions are 6-7:30 p.m. daily. $60. Call 426-KICK (5425) or 426-5739.

Striker/Keeper soccer camp. For ages 9 and up. Sessions are 6:30-8:30 p.m. $75. Call 426-KICK (5425) or 426-5739.

June 14-18

Soccer day camp. The camp covers individual technical skills (dribbling, shooting, passing and ball control) and team tactics (attacking, defending, combination play and finishing). For ages 9 and up. Sessions are 9 a.m.-noon. $125. Call 426-KICK (5425) or 426-5739.

June 14-24

Summer DanceFest 2004

Conducted in the Morrison Center, this camp consists of two weeks of workshops for dancers ages 12 and up at an intermediate to advanced technique level. Features a complete curriculum in ballet, jazz, modern and choreography taught by internationally known instructors. Includes a series of public performances at the end of the workshop featuring works by DanceFest faculty and guest choreographers. From $130 to $375. Housing option available. June 14-July 2

Boise State summer youth sports programs. Basketball, bowling, gymnastics, lacrosse, pocket billiards, racquetball, rock climbing, swimming, table tennis, tennis and weight training. Ages: swimming 5-14, gymnastics 6-14, billiards 10-14, all others 8-14. Cost $45-$50 per activity. Sign up starts 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. May 1 in Room 215 of the Kinesiology Building. Call 426-4270.

June 15-17

Preparing Our Neighborhood Youth (PONY). For high school juniors interested in professional-technical careers or career exploration. Students will learn to identify skills and how to achieve career goals. Time management, computer skills, technical skills, team and leadership skills will be practiced. Twenty students will be selected to stay on campus for this three-day camp. No cost to participants. Applications are available from high school counselors or by contacting the Selland College of Applied Technology at 426-1784. Funded by Idaho State Tech Prep. Deadline to apply is April 15.

June 20-24

July 7-14

Idaho Business Week. For high school sophomores, juniors and seniors and their teachers. Courses are conducted by business professionals. $85 registration fee. Deadline May 31. Co-sponsored by Idaho Department of Commerce and Industry, Idaho Department of Education and Boise State University. July 12-16

Cavalcade USA (Marching Band Camp), Bronco Stadium. For students entering ninth-12th grades and band directors. Includes workshops for drum majors, percussionists, color guard/flag corps and directors. Hours vary between 8:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Cost: $80 tuition, plus $100 for meals and housing for those staying on campus. Deadline for registration is June 23. Call 426-1846.

July 12-July 30
