Morrison Center Announces New Youth Outreach Program

April 7 marks the 20th Anniversary of the Velma V. Morrison Center for the Performing Arts at Boise State University. In conjunction with this celebration, and to continue and expand its dedication to contributing to the Treasure Valley community, the Morrison Center announces its new education and outreach program, ENCORE! (Explore Never-ending Creative-arts Opportunities Related to Education).

Beginning with the 2004-2005 academic year, the ENCORE! program will offer a series of four performances presented by national touring companies, specifically targeted to elementary school-aged students in the Treasure Valley.

The ENCORE! program encourages children to dream, imagine, discover and explore the world around them by experiencing the world of the performing arts. ENCORE! offers a series of performances specifically designed to not only cover topics related to the Idaho State Board of Education Humanities Standards, but also to improve students skills in areas such as critical thinking, communication and teamwork. Targeting elementary school-aged students throughout the Treasure Valley, ENCORE! works with teachers to enrich and enhance the education experiences of children.

The 2004 - 2005 ENCORE! Season at the Morrison Center includes the following programs:

  • Nov. 12, 2004 Coyote Tales, Dallas Childrens Theatre
  • Jan. 21, 2005 New Shanghai Circus
  • Feb. 14, 2005 Tom Sawyer, Kennedy Center Imagination Celebration
  • April 4, 2005 The Little Mermaid, American Family Theatre

There will be two matinee performances of each production, allowing a total of 4,000 students the opportunity to see each show. Tickets will be sold to class groups at the reduced price of $4 per student. Reservations for the 2004-2005 ENCORE! season will be accepted beginning April 12. All participating classes will receive a detailed study guide in advance of each performance to assist in preparation for the theatre experience.

All Treasure Valley elementary schools are invited to participate in ENCORE!
