Conference May 3-5 Brings
About 1,000 Geoscientists To Boise

| Approximately 1,000
geoscientists and students from throughout the West will gather at
the Boise Centre on the Grove May 3-5 for
technical presentations, symposiums, field trips and workshops as
part of an annual regional meeting of the Geological Society of
America (GSA). The conference includes
members of both Cordilleran and Rocky Mountain sections of the GSA
and is hosted by the geosciences department at Boise State
University.
The public is invited to attend a free symposium on “The Role
of Science in Making Natural Resource Decisions” from 8 a.m.-noon
on Monday, May 3, that is the keynote event in the conference. The
symposium, led by David Applegate of the U.S. Geological Survey
and Tammy Dickinson of the Natural Resource Council, will include
presentations about scientists’ roles in land-use planning ,
mining policy, native lands, the “stratigraphy” of Capitol Hill,
and other topics. The symposium will be held in the Summit Room of
the Centre on the Grove, and the public is requested to enter
through the southeast doors.
Other conference events, open to registered participants only,
include presentations on the Yellowstone Hot Spot, Paleontology
and Geology of the Missouri River, the Development the Western
Mediterranean Basin and many others topics; field trips to the
Owyhee Mountains, Craters of the Moon National Monument, Sinker
Butte and other locales; poster presentations from students at
Boise State and many other universities, and other activities.
