Six Boise State University faculty members were
recognized for sustained research and scholarship efforts in the
first ever Presidential Research and Scholarship Awards. One
faculty member from each of Boise State’s six academic colleges
received a $1,000 award at an April 28 ceremony on campus.
Organizers plan to make this an annual event.
Guidelines for the award included publications in key journals;
authorship of books or other scholarly works; patents; creative
works of art, music or theater; success in obtaining outside
funding; peer recognition; receipts of prestigious honorary
awards and medals; invited lectures; and memberships in
distinguished societies.
This year’s honorees are:

Dr. Steve Olsen-Smith, College of Arts and Sciences
Olsen-Smith was recognized for his research focusing on 19th
century American literature, with an emphasis on Herman
Melville. He is recognized nationally as an expert on Melville’s
life and writings and is the primary scholar responsible for
tracking the discovery of Melville’s annotated books. His
research has produced insightful new biographical information
about Melville.
Dr. Shikhar Sarin, College of Business and Economics
Sarin’s research record ranks in the top 10 percent of all
marketing professors nationwide. In June 2003 he published in
the prestigious Decision Sciences journal, and had two articles
published in The Journal of Marketing Theory and Practice, one
of which was the lead article. Sarin also published two
manuscripts in 2003 that were presented at a regional and
international conference. He is the former Bozzone Chair of
Management and Technology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in
New York.
Dr. Werner Hoeger, College of Education
Hoeger’s area of expertise is exercise psychology and he has
published nine books on fitness and wellness that are widely
used by universities across the United States. He is often
called upon to speak about his research projects, has consulted
around the world and is been involved in writing software and
producing videos. Hoeger has served on editorial boards and been
a guest editor for leading publications in sports medicine and
exercise.
Dr. Andy Giacomazzi, College of Social Sciences and Public
Affairs
Giacomazzi has published two books, four book chapters, 13
articles and 14 technical reports, in addition to presenting
more than 30 papers at professional meetings. He has had
considerable success in engaging criminal justice students in
undergraduate research through the university’s Undergraduate
Research Initiative. He has also procured more than $200,000 in
external and university research funding.
Dr. Elaine Long, College of Health Sciences
In addition to being a health studies professor, Long is a
licensed and registered dietitian. She has published in several
refereed journals, authored or co-authored numerous reports for
state and federal agencies, and is a regular presenter at
national conferences. Most recently, Long was a principal
investigator in a three-year U.S.. Department of Agriculture
study on elementary school food service menu planning.
Dr. Bill Knowlton, College of Engineering
Knowlton was recognized for his publication record, willingness
to work with other faculty members, cooperation with industry
and an outstanding record of research proposal submissions. He
has acquired 12 funded grants for more than $2 million total,
and was principal investigator on three of those. His high level
of visibility at the local, national and international levels is
seen as a model for other faculty as the engineering program at
Boise State continues to grow.
