Communication 101 "Speech Showcase" On May 4

The Boise State University communication department is hosting a Communication 101 “Speech Showcase” at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 4, in the Student Union Jordan Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public. Each of eight finalists from preliminary rounds of judging, representative of about 1,000 Communication 101 students, will present an 8-minute speech to compete for more than $500 in prize money to be awarded by a panel of six distinguished judges. Mr. Rob Perez, a senior vice president for U.S. Bank and major underwriter for the event, will present the awards. Communication professor Marty Most will emcee the program. During judges’ deliberations, names of interested Communication 101 students will be placed in a hat and five speakers will be drawn to give impromptu speeches. A separate panel of judges will evaluate the impromptu round and the winning student will receive a $25 award. The goals of the department in sponsoring this event are two-fold: to provide models of and motivate speakers toward speech excellence, and to celebrate successful communication in the public sphere.
