Grant Allows Students To Celebrate Lewis and Clark Expedition

A special grant will allow 20 Boise State University students to celebrate the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition.

Christy Babcock Quintero and Corrine M. Henke in the International Programs office at Boise State University received the $7,100 grant from NAFSA, the Association of International Educators Cooperative Grants Program.

Student application materials are available in the International Programs office at 1136 Euclid Ave. in Boise.

With the grant, international and U.S. students will learn about the Lewis and Clark expedition, Native American cultures, the geology and ecology of the area and the impact this expedition had on the western United States.

Participating students will travel to northern Idaho and follow parts of the Lewis and Clark trail. They will spend a day and night at the Clearwater Camp to be exposed to a variety of Native American skills and crafts and to participate in activities related to Native American life. Some of the activities include primitive archery, trapping and tomahawk throwing. Students will spend the night in tepees and listen to lectures from resident Native Americans and outdoor experts.

The trip will conclude at Lemhi pass and the city of Salmon, the homeland and birthplace of Sacajawea.
