Boise State Art Students Honor Veterans With New Memorial

In honor of the Memorial Pool that graced the Boise State University campus from 1968-1993 in commemoration of Boise State veterans, three-dimensional design students will erect a monument from 1:40-2 p.m. Thursday, May 6, on the Quad in front of the library. This final project of the semester will be in place until Thursday, May 13.

In the late 1960s, the GI Esquires, a group of students who raised and lowered the flags each morning, began soliciting money for a mall surrounding a fountain and a pool in front of the library. This was to be dedicated to the memory of alumni who had given their lives for their country. Memorial Pool was dedicated Feb. 18, 1968, near the Hemingway Center and Liberal Arts Building.

The pool was removed in 1993 to make room for the new addition to the library. A plaque that was at one end of the pool was moved to the current Memorial Plaza, a section of the Quad that houses the school’s original flagpoles.

The plaque reads as follows: “In memory of the Idaho men and women who have given their lives in the service of our country.”
