Lutze, Moncrief, Shadle Named 2004 Foundation Scholar Winners

Boise State professors Peter Lutze, Gary Moncrief and Susan Shadle were recently named the winners of the university’s 13th annual Foundation Scholar Awards. Lutze, communication, was named winner of the Service Award; Moncrief, political science, was named winner of the Research/Creative Activity Award; and Shadle, chemistry, received the Teaching Award.

The 2004 Foundation Scholars received a certificate of recognition and a monetary award during an on-campus ceremony held earlier this month.

A 14-year member of the Boise State faculty, Lutze, director of BSU’s Treasure Valley Public Access Television (TVTV), was recognized for his efforts to integrate teaching, research and service to create new means for social interaction and the free exchange of ideas on the student-operated cable television station. Lutze was also cited for his work with nonprofit organizations including the Idaho Film Foundation, the Boise City Arts Commission and the Idaho ACLU. He also served on numerous university, college and departmental committees at BSU.

A 27-year member of the faculty, Moncrief was honored for his work as a leading scholar in the field of legislative studies. His published work has explored issues of institutional reform in state legislatures, redistricting, the effect of the electoral systems on the election of women and minorities, campaign financing, candidate recruitment and term limits. He has edited two books and co-authored another. He has also written or co-written 17 book chapters, including the one on state politics in Politics in the American States, the core book used throughout the United States in graduate courses on state politics.

Shadle, who joined BSU in 1996, was honored for her work to revitalize and coordinate the Introductory Chemistry series, which is required by nearly 400 students in 28 different majors. During that process, she adopted an innovative teaching style based on the use of active work groups in the classroom. Because of overwhelming positive feedback from students, other faculty members in the chemistry department have adopted this style in their classes, and next semester classes in Boise State’s Honors program will be offered that incorporate her teaching style.
