Gene Harris Summer Jazz Camp June 21-25 Open To Grades 5-12

Registrations are now being accepted for the second annual Gene Harris Jazz Camp scheduled June 21-25 at Boise State University. The camp will focus on the art of jazz improvisation and is open to students in 5th through 12th grade. No previous experience is needed.

Students will be grouped based on level of experience and will work with these groups throughout the week. Students will also receive instruction specific to their instrument from performing professionals. The camp will finish with a free concert open to the public at 7 p.m. Friday, June 25, in the Special Events Center on the Boise State campus. It will feature participating students and special guest artist Jay Thomas, a Seattle native who plays trumpet, flugelhorn, flute and other instruments and has appeared on more than 60 recordings.

The camp fee is $109. An early-bird registration fee of $99 is available for those who register by May 31. Registration forms are available online at www.geneharris.org or by phone, 426-1772.

The camp is also open to educators for one continuing education credit. Those interested can register for the optional credit on the first day of camp. Call 426-1596 for more information about continuing education.
Faculty for the jazz camp includes: pianist Chuck Smith, an accomplished jazz educator and performer; saxophonist Brent Jensen, director of jazz studies at the College of Southern Idaho; trumpet player Rob Walker, music educator and jazz composer/performer; trombone player George Turner, music professor at Northwest Nazarene University; bass player Tom Jensen, music educator and performer; drum player Scott Reusser, music educator and performer; and trumpet player Brad Peters, director of the Boise State Big Band and executive producer of the Gene Harris Jazz Festival.
