Student Union Classic Performances Season Tickets On Sale June 15

Please note that the concert for Saturday, Oct. 16, has been changed. Igor Begelman, clarinet, and Larisa Gelman, bassoon, will not perform due to a family medical emergency. In their place will be Jason Vieaux, guitar, and Gary Schocker, flute.

Vieaux and Schocker perform classical, Latin, Romantic, new and old works for flute and guitar. Audiences nationwide have heard them featured extensively on National Public Radio’s Performance Today and have been equally rewarded with the duo’s first recording for the Azica label. Selections include standard flute and guitar works, Schocker's new composition “Dream Travels” and their own arrangements of Latin music.

Season tickets are on sale beginning June 15 by mail or phone for the Student Union Classic Performances 2004-05 series. Presented by Boise State University Student Activities, the series brings extraordinary traditional and contemporary musicians to campus each year.

Season tickets, available until Sept. 10, are $50 for the general public and $25 for students 17 and under, seniors and Boise State students, faculty, staff and alumni. For ticket orders, call Select-a-Seat at 426-1494. You may also download a form to mail your order at union.boisestate.edu (the form will not be posted until June 15).

Following is the schedule for the six-concert series, which is held at 8 p.m. Saturdays in the Special Events Center, the intimate concert hall located in the west end of the Student Union. Free parking is available in the Liberal Arts parking lot just west of the Special Events Center.

Sept. 18 — St. Petersburg String Quartet. One of the world’s leading string quartets, the St. Petersburg String Quartet celebrates its 20th anniversary during the 2004-05 season. The group has been described as “spectacular, stunning, and passionate” for its precision and elegance. In 1995 the quartet was nominated for a Grammy Award and earned a silver medal at the Tokyo International Competition of Chamber Ensembles. From 1996 until 2003, the St. Petersburg String Quartet was the quartet in residence at Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio.

Oct. 16 — Igor Begelman, clarinet, and Larisa Gelman, bassoon. Highly accomplished soloists and chamber musicians Igor Begelman and Larisa Gelman have performed together at major concert halls and music festivals throughout the United States and abroad. Begelman is the winner of the 2000 Avery Fisher Career Grant and is currently an instructor at Brooklyn and Swarthmore colleges. Gelman is a graduate of the Yale School of Music and has performed with the American Symphony, Carolina Chamber Symphony and the New Juilliard Ensemble.

Nov. 13 — Vassily Primakov, piano. A virtuoso pianist who took first prize in the 2002 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, Primakov has given recitals abroad in Switzerland, Romania, Russia and Japan. He has also performed as a guest artist for the Utah Symphony, San Diego Symphony and the Colorado Springs Symphony. Born in Moscow in 1979, Primakov is a 2002 graduate of The Juilliard School.

Dec. 4 — The Falla Guitar Trio. These dynamic artists have received worldwide recognition for their superb performances of classical repertoire and jazz improvisations. The group is comprised of Gyan Riles, artistic director for the San Francisco Classical Guitar Society; Dusan Bogdanovic, professor at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music; and Kenton Youngstrom, professor at Pepperdine University.

Jan. 29 — Chicago Brass. Chicago's original brass quintet, Chicago Brass possesses the technical and musical mastery needed to perform all periods and styles. Described as “one of the premier ensembles of our time,” Chicago Brass has earned rave reviews from The Washington Post and Chicago Tribune. The group’s recent CD titled Virtuoso Brass: Bach, Handel, Vivaldi is distributed by Delos International.

March 5 — Linda Wang, violin. At age 9, Linda Wang made her violin solo debut with Zubin Mehta and the New York Philharmonic. Since that time, Wang has been enchanting audiences with exceptional performances at many concert venues, including Carnegie Hall and the Berlin Schauspeilhaus.
