Frank Zang, director of
communication for the Utah Athletic Foundation, has been named the
new director of communications and marketing at Boise State
University. Zang replaces Larry Burke, who retired two years ago
after 28 years as the director of university relations. The
position has been filled on an interim basis by Bob Evancho, who
has been named associate director of communications. Zang will
start his new job August 9.
Zang’s experience in public relations and communications was
honed during his tenure as associate director of public
information for the United States Olympic Committee from 1991-98.
He also served as director of communications and media for the
Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Olympic and Paralympic
Winter Games. Before his Olympic affiliation, Zang graduated from
the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Journalism
and worked in the sports information office at the Georgia
Institute of Technology.
During his Olympic experience he served as the media contact
for U.S. Olympic Team White House visits and U.S. Olympic
Congress; served as managing editor for the Olympian
magazine and various Olympic commemorative books; managed a
four-person staff and 90-person Games-time staff of Olympic news
services editors and reporters; designed and delivered a news
bureau that serviced 9,000 local and international journalists for
the 2002 Olympic Winter Games; and produced media publications,
press releases, handled speaking engagements, developed media
strategy and coordinated media events, including crisis management
during the Olympic bid scandal.
“I am thrilled to have someone of Frank’s caliber and
reputation at Boise State,” said Boise
State President Bob Kustra. “His enthusiasm, style and in-depth
understanding of media relations will make him an ideal
spokesperson for Boise State as we convey our message of
excellence to local, regional and national audiences.”
Recognizing the expanded marketing efforts needed to bring the
university to the next level, Kustra initiated some restructuring
within university relations, including the new appointment of Bob
Evancho as associate director.
“Bob has done a wonderful job keeping University Relations
running smoothly while tackling new projects such as producing
‘New Horizons in Education’ for Boise State Radio. His appointment
to this position will help ensure his continued involvement in
leadership decisions and a smooth transition for University
Relations,” Kustra said.
