Scholars Bowl Brings High School Students To Boise State

About 200 high school students from throughout the Northwest who are enrolled in federally funded programs for limited-income students will compete in a Scholars Bowl and other activities on Saturday, July 10, at Boise State University.

The participating students are from the Treasure Valley as well as from Portland, Ore., Seattle and Olympia, Wash., and other areas, said Sue Huizinga, project director of the TRIO Pre-College Programs at Boise State. The students will stay in the residence halls at Boise State and compete in a knowledge bowl and in writing, speech, art and basketball competitions.

Students who participate in the Scholars Bowl have an opportunity to meet other students from around the Northwest, enjoy some healthy competition and have some fun, said Huizinga.

The event is part of federally funded TRIO programs that are designed to instill motivation and academic skills in limited-income students whose parents have not completed a bachelors degree program. The programs goals are to assure their graduation from high school, their enrollment in post-secondary institutions and their graduation from college with a bachelors degree.

Saturdays Scholars Bowl competitors will include 15 high school students from the Treasure Valley who are enrolled in Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search programs at Boise State, part of the TRIO pre-college programs, Huizinga added.

More information about Boise States TRIO programs can be found on the Web at http://education.boisestate.edu/multicultural/ub/upward_bound.htm
