Boise State Kicks Off 2004 Academic Year With Concerts

Flutist Francesca Arnone Lynn Berg Marcellus Brown American Piano Duo St Petersburg String Quartet

The Boise State University departments of Music and Student Activities kick off a new academic year with the following concerts.

Sept. 4, Boise Centre on the Grove, 4:15 p.m. — Treasure Valley Concert Band
The Treasure Valley Concert Band, under the direction of Boise State music professor Marcellus Brown, performs as part of the Boise City Arts Celebration. The program includes selections from “The Pirates of the Caribbean” soundtrack, big band jazz favorites and great American marches. The free concert is presented by the Boise State Department of Music and the Boise City Arts Commission. Call 426-3980.

Sept. 17 and 18 — The St. Petersburg String Quartet
Two evening concerts and a free Saturday morning workshop feature the St. Petersburg Quartet, celebrating its 20th anniversary this season. One of the world’s leading string quartets, the group has been described as “spectacular, stunning and passionate” for its precision and elegance. The quartet was formed in 1985 by graduates of the Leningrad Conservatory; in 1995 it was nominated for a Grammy Award and earned a silver medal at the Tokyo International Competition of Chamber Ensembles.

Sept. 19, Morrison Center Recital Hall, 4 p.m. — Flutist Francesca Arnone
The Faculty Artist Series presents Boise State visiting flute professor Francesca Arnone, principal flute with the Boise Philharmonic, with professors Jeanne Belfy on oboe and James Cook on piano. Selections include music by CPE Bach, Ginastera, Sancan and Prodofiev. $5 general, $3 seniors and free to students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff.

Sept. 23, Morrison Center Recital Hall, 7:30 p.m. — American Piano Duo
The American Piano Duo consists of Boise State piano professor Del Parkinson and Jeffrey Shumway, head of keyboard studies at Brigham Young University. They celebrate their 20th anniversary as the American Piano Duo with an all-Rachmaninoff program. The evening features two suites and “Symphonic Dances.” Both professors are currently on sabbatical to perform extensively and record the music of Rachmaninoff. Their Gershwin CD was released in 1998 and a Mendelssohn CD was released earlier this year. $5 general, $3 seniors and free to students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff.

Sept. 25, Morrison Center Recital Hall, 7:30 p.m. — Lynn Berg
Baritone Lynn Berg presents a Faculty Artist Series program of music from Franz Schubert, Johannes Brahms and Roger Quilter. He will be accompanied by Jerry Jensen on piano. $5 general, $3 seniors and free to students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff.
