Boise State Celebrates Latino Heritage Month Beginning Mid-September

The Boise State University Cultural Center will celebrate Latino Heritage Month with a special lineup of programming focused on Latino themes and issues. Latino Heritage Month officially begins in mid-September in remembrance of the anniversary of independence for seven Latin American countries—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico and Chile. All events are free and open to the public. For more information on any event, contact the Cultural Center at 426-5950.

Sept. 9, Cultural Center, 5-9 p.m. — Local Latino author Ev Torrez will host a reading of his work, including “Narco,” which was named Best Adventure Novel this summer in Chicago by the Latino Book Awards. The evening includes a reception and book signing.

Sept. 13-17, Student Union Fireplace Lounge, 7 a.m.-11 p.m. — One-man photo exhibition of Latino life by Claudio Beagarie.

Sept. 16, Student Union Patio, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. — A fiesta to celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day featuring information booths, crafts, snacks and entertainment. Booth space is free; to sign up call 426-1449.

Sept. 27, Cultural Center, 7 p.m. — Celebrate welding instructor Juan Martinez’s appearance on the popular Discovery Channel Show, “Monster Garage with Jesse James.” The celebration includes plenty of food and fun. RSVP to 426-5950.

Sept. 30, Cultural Center, 6 p.m. — The Center kicks of its mentor program for first generation college students. Mentors will meet their assigned students for the year and work on team building. Volunteers who would like to be a mentor can call Vince Moreno at 426-1449.
