Celebrates Filipino Culture Oct. 15
|
Galing
Galing 2004, a Filipino dinner, song and dance festival,
comes to Boise State University Friday, Oct. 15, in the
Student Union Jordan Ballroom. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and a
buffet style dinner is at 6 p.m. Entertainment begins at 7
p.m. Tickets are $15 through Select-a-Seat and will not be
sold at the door. The first 50 children younger than five
years old will receive free tickets. Parking is free in the
Student Union visitor lot.
Galing Galing, meaning “very good” in Filipino, is a casual
celebration of Filipino culture. The event will include a
screening of the film “Otso-Otso Pamela-Mela Wan,”
traditional music and Otso Otso dance instruction provided
by performer and vocal coach Hannah Alandy. Raffle tickets
will be sold at the event for $1 each to benefit the
Filipino-American Organization (FILAMO) scholarship fund.
The evening’s menu includes lumpia, adobo, pancit, arroz
caldo and steamed and fried rice.
Hannah Alandy was born in the Philippines and performed in
choirs and solo competitions from the age of 5. In the
1993-94 academic year, she received first runner-up standing
at the Tawag NG Tanghalan, considered the most popular,
prestigious and longest-running Filipino singing contest in
America. She has since made many appearances in the media
with other artists in the Philippines and the U.S. She
currently lives in Long Beach, Calif. and continues to sing
and teach voice in her spare time.
FILAMO’s goals are to share Filipino traditions and
heritage, integrate Filipino and American cultures and
promote education and professional development of Filipino
Americans. The Galing Galing event is co-sponsored by the
Boise State University Cultural Center. For more information
