Sherman Alexie To
Speak At Boise State Oct. 27
|
Boise
State University will present a lecture and book-signing by
Sherman Alexie at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, in the Special
Events Center. His presentation is titled “Without
Reservations: An Urban Indian’s Comic, Poetic and Highly
Irreverent Look at the World.” The event is part of the
Student Union and Activities Global Expressions Series and
is free and open to the public.
Alexie, an author, poet, screenwriter and director, has been
hailed as one of the best young writers of his generation.
In June 1999, The New Yorker named him one of the top 20
writers of the 21st century. Alexie wrote and produced the
feature film Smoke Signals based on his
book The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. The film
won the Audience Award and Filmmakers Trophy
at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival.
Alexie received the Washington State Arts Commission Poetry
Fellowship in 1991 and the National Endowment for the Arts
Poetry Fellowship in 1992. Shortly after receiving his
second fellowship, two of his poetry collections were
published, The Business of Fancydancing and I Would Steal
Horses. Alexie now lives with his wife and two sons in
Seattle, and has published 14 books of poetry and short
stories. His latest book, Ten Little Indians, offers nine
poignant and emotionally resonant new stories about Native
Americans who, like all Americans, find themselves at
personal and cultural crossroads,
