Boise State Art Exhibit Examines Hunters, Hunted

"The Hunter and the Hunted,” an exhibition by Boise State University MFA candidate MaLynda Poulsen-Jones, will be displayed Oct. 21-Nov. 4 in Gallery 1 (Liberal Arts Gallery) of the Boise State Visual Arts Center. An opening reception will be held from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21. This event is free and open to the public. Free parking for the reception will be available in the Liberal Arts parking lot.

“The Hunter and the Hunted” is a beautiful and disturbing body of work that speaks about the anxiety experienced by those who have conflicting philosophical alliances between the hunter and the hunted. Photographs are experiences captured as souvenirs or trophies of ephemeral events. Poulsen-Jones transforms nostalgic hunting photographs — which are both documentations and souvenirs of the American hunting experience — into large-scale aesthetically seductive drawings. The juxtaposition of these drawings with their more metaphoric three-dimensional counterparts conveys a sense of apprehension over the ethical and political conflicts surrounding the treatment of animals, and more specifically hunting.
