This Week At Boise State (Oct. 24-30)

The following are upcoming events at Boise State University for the week of October 24-30. Please note that all events are subject to change. For updated information on all events, go to http://events.boisestate.edu.

SEPT. 24-NOV. 3
Tibetan Paintings-Kumar Lama exhibit. Original work by Kumar Lama will be on display at the Sacred Art of Tibet exhibition in the Boise State University Student Union Gallery. The exhibit will be available for viewing from 7 a.m.-11 p.m. daily. Call 426-4636.

SUNDAY, OCT. 24
Michael Fischer, tuba and James Cook, piano, Faculty Artist Series. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 4 p.m. $5 general, $3 for seniors and free for students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff. Call 426-3980.

Boise State Orchestra. Morrison Center Main Hall. 7:30 p.m. The Boise State University Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra present a special program of “Music Inspired By The Gypsies,” featuring guest soloist Charles Castleman, professor of music at the Eastman School of Music, on violin. A prizewinner in the Tchaikowsky and Brussels competitions, Castleman has been a soloist with the orchestras of Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Moscow, Mexico City, New York, San Francisco, Seoul and Shanghai. Selections include Brahms’ Hungarian Dances nos. 5, 6, and 7, Bartok’s Romanian Folk Dances, Enesco’s Romanian Rhapsody no. 2, and Wieniawski’s Concerto no. 2 in d minor for violin and orchestra, Op. 22. Tickets are $5 general, $3 for seniors and free for students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff. Call 426-3980.

TUESDAY, OCT. 26
Lecture, “Find Out Why We Want to Boot the Bell.” Special Events Center. 7 p.m. The Idaho Progressive Student Alliance presents an informational lecture about the controversy around the Boise State Taco Bell Arena. Free.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 27
Sherman Alexie. “Without Reservations: An Urban Indian’s Comic, Poetic and Highly Irreverent Look at the World.” Special Events Center. 7 p.m. Author, poet, screenwriter and director, Sherman Alexie, will present a lecture and book signing as part of the Student Union and Activities Global Expressions Series. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 426-4636.

THURSDAY, OCT. 28
Marcy Newman, reading. The Women’s Center. Noon. The English Majors Association and the Gender Studies Program presents a reading and discussion of Newman’s new book, Beyond Slash, Burn, and Poison. A book signing and breast cancer slide show will follow the discussion.

Gay and Lesbian History Lecture. The Cultural Center. 7 p.m. Alan Virta, head of Special Collections at the Boise State University Albertson Library, will speak about Idaho’s gay and lesbian history. After traveling around the state with a slide show to share the library’s gay and lesbian archives, Virta received an ACLU of Idaho Equal Justice Award in 2003 for promoting and protecting civil liberties in Idaho. Sponsored by the Bisexuals, Gays, Lesbians and Allies for Diversity, the event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 426-5950.

OCT. 28-NOV. 2
Day of the Dead Altar Display. Student Union Fireplace Lounge. Free. Latin American students will present altars for the Women of Juarez.  In the past decade hundreds of women from Ciudad Juarez have disappeared or been murdered. Presented by Organizacion de Estudiantes Latino-Americanos and the Cultural Center. For more information, contact Ramon Silva at 426-3038.

FRIDAY, OCT. 29
Filipino Lecture by Shelton Woods. Student Union Brink Room. 3 p.m. Boise State professor of Southeast Asian history will lecture on Filipino history and culture. Free. Presented by FILAMO and Boise State Cultural Center. Call 426-5950.

David Abel and William L Fox, poetry reading. Student Union Farnsworth Room. 7:30 p.m. Boise State MFA Program in Creative Writing presents David Abel, author of the chapbook Cut, and William Fox, author of Sand, for a reading and book signing. SATURDAY, OCT. 30
Lynn Berg recital. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 7:30 p.m. Baritone Lynn Berg presents a Faculty Artist Series program of music from Franz Schubert, Johannes Brahms and Roger Quilter. Steven Curtis Chapman. Taco Bell Arena. 6 p.m. Singer songwriter Steven Curtis Chapman and “Passion” worship leader Chris Tomlin present a sanctified mixture of fireside folk tales, earthy soul and contemporary pop wisdom. $31.50, $26.50, $20.50 through Select-a-Seat. Call 426-1494.

Nightmare on University Drive. Special Events Center and Student Union. 1-5 p.m. Student Programs Board presents a Halloween event for the entire family. Activities include face painting, pumpkin painting, cookie decorating, mad scientist show, spooky storytelling, a haunted hallway and a showing of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. $3 per family for Boise State students, faculty and staff; $5 per family general.
