REACH Fair at Boise State Promotes Healthy Lifestyle

Boise State University invites the community to “REACH for a healthier you,” a free health fair from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, in the Student Union Jordan Ballroom. The 2004 Recreation, Education and Awareness of Community Health (REACH) Health Fair is a product of kinesiology professor Caile Spear’s health promotion class. The mission of REACH is to promote optimal health to the Boise State campus and surrounding communities.

Idaho’s First Lady Patricia Kempthorne and Boise State Athletic Director Gene Bleymaier will serve as emcees, offering opening remarks beginning at 9:45 a.m. Kempthorne will focus her remarks on the importance of creating healthy habits in our children and Bleymaier will speak about the importance of making healthy decisions during early adulthood. Following the reading of an official proclamation from Governor Dirk Kempthorne, a ribbon cutting will signal the fair’s start.

This is the 8th year the class has organized the REACH fair, which features a variety of activities including nutrition information, low cost and free health care screenings (including bone density and blood pressure), tetanus shots and the BodPod body composition assessment. Local health promotion vendors will also be present to answer questions and provide information.

Participants are eligible for door prizes, which include footballs signed by the Bronco football team and water bottles. The Boise Rescue Mission will also have barrels set up to collect coats for its “Coats for Kids” campaign. Free parking will be available the day of the event in the west side of the stadium parking lot. For further information, please call 426-3656.
