Indian
Percussionist Sandip Burman at Boise State Nov. 21
|
Boise State University presents tabla artist Sandip Burman
and Friends in a concert at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, in
the Special Events Center. The concert is part of the Global
Expressions Series featuring music, spoken word and dance
from a variety of cultures. Tickets are $10 general, and $5
for students, seniors, Boise State employees and alumni
through Select-a-Seat. Call 426-4636 for more information.
Burman will also present a free music clinic for horns,
strings and percussion from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Nov.
21, in the Special Events Center. Space is limited, so
interested musicians must R.S.V.P. at 426-5950.
Burman is considered to be one of the greatest tabla
performers in the world and has made a name for himself as a
player with blinding speed and crisp, clear precision. His
vast repertoire, flexibility and creativity have enabled him
to play jazz and world music in addition to traditional
Indian classical music. (Tabla is a set of two small tuned
drums used in North Indian music.)
His work is featured on the soundtrack of Tim Burton’s “Mars
Attacks” and on the album Global Fusion from Warner
Brothers. Burman has also been a visiting faculty member at
Rotterdam Conservatory in Holland and he has toured and
taught in the United States, Europe, Mexico, North Africa,
Israel and Canada.
