Members of the Boise Philharmonic and Boise State University
Department of Music are teaming up with Mariachi
International to present “1,000 Years of Music from Mexico.”
The concert is an evening of music, dance, and narration
celebrating the history and evolution of sacred and secular
music from Mexico.
The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, at St.
John’s Cathedral, 775 N. 8th St. in Boise. Though it will
benefit Catholic Charities of Idaho (CCI), it is not a
religious event and is open to the public. Tickets may be
purchased by calling CCI at (208) 345-6031. Tickets are $20
in advance or $25 at the door.
Services provided by CCI throughout the state of Idaho
include immigration legal work, counseling, family support,
youth development, children-at-risk programs, parish social
ministry and educational presentations.
Marie Hoff, executive director of CCI, says, “CCI serves all
citizens of Idaho regardless of race, religion or ability to
pay. We need the community to support us and in return, we
give something beautiful back to them that is spiritually
enriching.”
Lucio Prado, who performs in the group Mariachi
International, initiated the fund-raising concert. He says,
“CCI serves the whole community, not just Catholics. For
example, it provides immigration assistance to those who
can’t ordinarily afford these legal services.” He added,
“The concert is really a journey; a journey that begins with
music of the Native American Aztecs, and culminates with
music of the present day.”
Prado is also a host of Radio Universidad, which broadcasts
in Spanish on Saturdays. Radio Universidad is a public
service of Boise State Radio and broadcasts on Idaho’s Jazz
Station (730AM, Boise, 1450AM, Twin Falls, and 89.9FM,
McCall).
