'Boise
TubaChristmas' Brings Cheer
To Downtown Dec. 4
|
More than 60 tuba and baritone players known collectively as
Boise TubaChristmas will once again serenade downtown Boise
with traditional Christmas carols on Saturday, Dec. 4. The
group will perform for free at 3:30 p.m. at the Boise Centre
on The Grove and at 4:30 p.m. at the Statehouse Rotunda.
This unique ensemble is under the direction of David Mathie,
professor of low brass at Boise State University and
trombonist with the Boise Philharmonic, and Michael Fischer,
professor of tuba at Boise State and tubist with the Boise
Philharmonic. Members of the ensemble include tuba players
from local high schools, local band directors, Boise State
students and community members.
This is the 13th year of this Boise tradition, although
TubaChristmas has been a tradition in many larger cities in
this country since the first performance in New York City in
1974. Boise is one of the few cities in the Northwest to
present this unique concert.
The music for this year’s TubaChristmas was arranged by
noted American composer Alec Wilder, and includes Deck the
Halls, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, Silver Bells, O Come
All Ye Faithful and Silent Night. Each concert site will
host a half-hour program of more than 20 carols.
