Boise State Students Mount Public Art Display Dec. 10-15

Boise State University art students enrolled in Kirsten Furlong’s basic design class will erect a public sculpture on campus Friday, Dec. 10. It will remain in place through Wednesday, Dec. 15, as part of a class assignment to create a temporary outdoor, site-specific piece of art that is able to sustain the climate of the campus for several days.

Furlong’s students created several proposals for a public art piece related to a specific site on campus. After presentations of the proposals, the class voted on one idea to fabricate together as their final piece of the semester.

The winning project, designed by Justin Kleine as “a voyeuristic experiment in monolithic imposition,” is premised on voyeurism and its place in today’s society. Cited examples of our culture’s voyeuristic tendencies include reality television shows, “Girls Gone Wild” videos and the Internet. Based on the idea of a “peep show” booth, the piece is a large black booth with eyeholes for passers-by to satisfy their own “voyeuristic” urges and to question their own expectations.

The piece will be located on the Boise State University Quad near the Math/Geosciences Building. Class members include Kleine, Marie Hawkins, Jenaleigh Kiebert, Michelle Keller, Jessica Robinson, Trina Smith, Jesus Gonzalez, Kristina Rickard, Amanda VanLeuven, Jessica Quint and Amanda Robinson.
