Boise State
Professor Teaches Two-Week Design Course In Japan June 3-17

Boise State
University art professor John Francis will lead a course in
the role of design in Japanese culture June 3-17 in Japan.
Students will investigate ancient and modern design as they
visit the International Design Center and the Toyota
Automobile Museum in Nagoya, as well as sites in Kyoto and
Tokyo.
Students will have the opportunity to explore
temples and castles, tour museums featuring traditional
Japanese crafts, modern art and animation, visit publishing
and industrial design complexes and attend a kimono show.
“I’ve always had an interest in Japanese
design and art,” said Francis, an award-winning graphic
artist. “I find it a fascinating culture. The people are
incredibly helpful, warm and inviting. I thought this would
be a great experience for Boise State students.”
The $2,610 cost (plus course registration
fee), covers airfare to and from Japan, transportation
within Japan, lodging in Kyoto
and Tokyo, admission and entrance fees and some meals.
Students may also elect to participate in a home stay
program while in Nagoya for an additional $100. Permission
from the instructor is required in order to enroll, but no
previous design experience is necessary. For more
information contact Francis at (208) 426-3995 or
