Baghdad Sketches, by Freya Stark, is the next book up for
discussion in the Spring 2005 Literature For Lunch series
sponsored by the Boise State University English Department.
The discussion is from 12:10 to 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 2,
at the Boise Public Library, 715 S. Capitol Blvd. It is free
and open to the public.
Stark was a prolific and
extremely popular travel writer. The first of her many
travel books, this series of essays offers a view of Iraq
outside the British influence. As a 35-year-old woman in
1928, Stark spent four years in Iraq and Persia, visiting
ancient and medieval sites and traveling alone through some
of the wilder corners of the region. While there she
wrote a number of pieces for the Baghdad Times, which
would eventually be published in book form as Baghdad
Sketches.
The next book in the monthly series is Brick Lane, by
Monica Ali, on March 30. Books in the series are available
at the Boise State Bookstore for a 25 percent discount;
parking validation with your purchase can be used at the
visitors lot behind the Student Union. Books are also
available at the Vista Book Gallery, 890 S. Vista Ave. in
the Vista Village shopping center, for a 20 percent
discount.
