Boise State Joins World Sports Humanitarian Hall Of Fame For New Academic Program, Scholarship

A new academic program on sports ethics, coaching and humanitarian studies is being developed by the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame and Boise State University. The certificate program, planned to begin in the 2005-06 academic year, will offer credit and non-credit courses that will be coordinated by Boise State’s Department of Kinesiology in collaboration with the University of Idaho and Idaho State University.

The Myron and Gwen Finkbeiner Endowed Scholarship Fund is also being established to support students enrolled in the kinesiology department and studying the new curriculum. Myron Finkbeiner is the founder of the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame in Boise. Scholarship funds will be raised through a series of events, including this year’s induction ceremony on June 2.

The announcements were made Tuesday in conjunction with the unveiling of the class of 2005 inductees into the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame, located at the Allen Noble Hall of Fame on the Boise State campus.

“We have a strong academic program in kinesiology and are excited about this partnership with the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame,” said Sona Andrews, Boise State provost and vice president for academic affairs. “We have an opportunity to help train and educate coaches, players, and parents on how to be role models for ethical behavior and giving back to their community.”

“The World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame is excited about the potential of this new area of study for our community, the state of Idaho and beyond,” said Executive Director Kim Seewald. “Our latest inductees and other honorees serve as examples of true humanitarians.”
