News Release March 8, 2005 Boise State Honors Students For Outstanding Leadership
The following student leaders were honored at Boise State University’s Leadership Quest conference held Friday, March 4. Leadership Quest is a daylong series of training workshops that facilitates emerging leaders’ introduction to concepts of leadership theory, furthers personal development and refines organizational skills.
Heather Gribble of Boise, a senior majoring in graphic design, was awarded the 2005 President’s Award. This award is presented for contribution to the general welfare of Boise State through outstanding leadership and service without regard for recognition.
Gribble is director of the Volunteer Services Board and an instructor and peer advisor for LEADS (Leadership Education and Development Series). She has a 4.0 grade point average and was named to the USA Today Collegiate Academic Team. Gribble is a member of Golden Key National Honor Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Phi Kappa Phi honor society and the Boise State Honors College. In addition, she coaches the Bishop Kelly High School volleyball and softball teams and has been a member of the Oinkari Basque Dancers.
Sarah Reyes of Nampa, a senior majoring in social work with a criminal justice emphasis, was awarded the 2005 Director’s Award. This award is presented for outstanding leadership, commitment and service toward the betterment of student organizations, activities and programs at Boise State.
Reyes, the former diversity affairs director for ASBSU (student government), received a 2003 Award of Recognition for her contributions to the BSU Cultural Center. She is a member of BSU’s Cultural and Ethnic Diversity Board, is a returning women’s mentor and a member of the Organization of Student Social Workers. A member of the Social Work Honors Society, she has also served as secretary of BSU’s Single Parents Club and as vice president of the Filipino-American club. She is currently serving her senior internship as a probation officer for Ada County Juvenile Courts Services.
Fernando Mejia of Cuautitlan Izcalli, Mexico, a freshman majoring in secondary education, political science, was awarded the 2005 Larry Selland Leadership Scholarship Award. This award is presented to an emerging campus leader. Mejia is a member of the Organización de Estudiantes Latino-Americanos (OELA), where he has chaired several sub-committees. He often visits high schools in an effort to recruit Latino leaders and is involved with the Idaho Community Action Network. He works tirelessly on campus to raise awareness about issues affecting the Latino community and was instrumental in creating a Cesar Chavez Week at Boise State.
