Kustra Appointed To NCAA Task Force On The Future Of Intercollegiate Athletics

Boise State President Bob Kustra has been appointed to the Presidential Task Force on the Future of Intercollegiate Athletics by NCAA President Myles Brand. The task force will explore the alignment of academics and athletics in such areas as fiscal responsibility, commercialism, organizational structure and student-athlete well-being.

Brand announced the task force’s creation but not the makeup of college and university presidents and chancellors in January and appointed University of Arizona President Peter Likins as the chair. The task force is similar in its role to a presidential group that studied and made recommendations leading to the academic reform package.

“I feel Boise State is the model of a university that has achieved athletic success while not compromising its academic mission,” Kustra said. “I look forward to providing a perspective that can balance the interests of athletics and academics in American colleges and universities.”

The task force is expected to complete its work in 18 to 24 months with the first meeting scheduled after spring commencements on June 10-11 in Tucson, Ariz. The task force has four working groups: 1) implications of academic values and standards; 2) fiscal responsibility; 3) presidential leadership of internal and external constituencies; and 4) student-athlete well-being.

“This is the next step in a systematic process of integration athletics into the academic mission of colleges and universities,” said Brand in his task force announcement. “I am delighted that a group of senior leaders from a broad spectrum of institutions have recognized the value of athletics to higher education and the need to address a variety of challenges for the future.”
