BSU Prof Discusses 'Politics of Help' In Lecture March 16 As Part Of Tsunami Series

The Politics of Help: Foreign Assistance and the Boxing Day Tsunami, will be presented Wednesday, March 16, by Boise State University political science professor Ross Burkhart as part of an ongoing lecture series, Terror from the Sea, that focuses on the 2004 tsunami and its aftermath.

Burkharts free lecture is at 7:30 p.m. in Room 106 of the Liberal Arts Building, located west of the Special Events Center off of University Drive.

Burkhart will discuss the needs of the areas affected by the tsunami, the amount and type of foreign assistance that has been given to them by countries and non-governmental organizations, and the challenges of supplying assistance that is of genuine help to the affected people.

Burkharts lecture is part of an interdisciplinary effort by BSU academic departments and programs to explore the causes of the Dec. 26 tsunami, its historical context, and the social, political, environmental and health issues the tragedy is continuing to generate.

The series concludes with a lecture on March 30, Health Effects of Tsunamis: Immediate and Long Term Concerns, presented by Uwe Reischl, M.D., director of the Center for Health Policy.

The series is sponsored by the BSU Volunteer Services Board, International Programs, Extended Studies and Center for Health Policy. For more information, contact Extended Studies at 426-1709.
