Boothe Named College of Education Dean At BSU

The chair of the academic department with the fifth-largest number of early childhood/elementary graduates in the United States has been named the new dean of the College of Education at Boise State University.

Diane Boothe, chair of curriculum and instruction in the College of Education at the State University of West Georgia, was selected as BSU’s education dean following a national search. She will join Boise State July 1.

At West Georgia, Boothe led a department in one of the largest colleges of education in the country with faculty serving as administrators and teachers in the university’s doctoral program in school improvement.

“I am confident that Diane will provide the vision, leadership, and energy necessary to enhance the learning and scholarly environment of the College of Education,” said Sona Andrews, Boise State provost and vice president for academic affairs. “Her experience, combined with her involvement in local civic organizations, an active and ongoing scholarly record, public school experience, and bilingual ability and perspectives she will bring as a Native American, make Diane the perfect leader to guide the college through what will be an exciting period of change and growth.”

Boothe earned a bachelor of arts in English and master of science in school administration from California State University, Fullerton and her doctorate in public administration from the University of Southern California.

Among her many accomplishments, Boothe has done extensive consulting, grant evaluation and served on school improvement teams for the Georgia Department of Education. She has been a member of approximately 20 professional societies, has received numerous honors, has written more than 50 scholarly articles, reports and columns, and has received a dozen grants.

A former public school teacher and principal who speaks both English and Spanish, Boothe has taught English as a second language, foreign language methods and middle grades courses. She is the former chair of the Higher Education Interest Section for TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) International, editor of the TESOL in Action Journal, past president of Georgia TESOL, the West Georgia chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, and served as the first director of The Advanced Academy of Georgia.

Boothe replaces Joyce Garrett, who retired from the university last year. Margaret Miller, professor and former chair of BSU’s Counselor Education Department, has served as interim dean since Garrett’s departure.
