Boise State Women's Center Announces Selland Humanitarian
Award Winners
The Boise State University Women’s Center announced the winners
of the Larry Selland Humanitarian Awards today. Student Peggy Peña Hottel
and counselor Deborah Teater were honored at the annual awards breakfast in
the Boise State Student Union.
Peña Hottel, a social work student, volunteers with Somalian refugees and
Boise’s homeless population, gathers packages for soldiers in Iraq and works
as a court appointed advocate for children. According to her nominator, Peña
Hottel exudes a “willingness to go above and beyond. She has a very subtle,
quiet and unassuming manner about her, an openness and approachability that
make her a natural advocate for children and adults alike.”
Teater, a counselor for Boise State’s Center for New Directions in Canyon
County, serves single parents, displaced homemakers and others in
transition. Her nominator wrote that Teater was a “sounding board,
counselor, resource and friend. We can count the number [of students she]
has served through counseling, but we’ll never know the number whose lives
have been changed because she was able to help them have hope.”
The Selland award was created in 1997 to honor the men and women of Boise
State who best exemplify the caring nature, compassion and integrity of the
late Larry G. Selland, former dean, executive vice president and interim
president of the university. Selland, who died of cancer in 1996, was an
early supporter of the Women’s Center and as interim president secured funds
for the Children’s Center, renovation of the Canyon County Center,
additional student apartments and other projects.
Two awards are given each year, one to a student in good academic standing
and one to a current faculty or staff member. For more information on the
award, visit
