Ahsahta Press Announces Publication Of 'Oriflamme' By Sandra
Miller
Ahsahta Press is pleased to announce the publication of
“Oriflamme,” a collection of
poetry by Sandra Miller of Iowa City, Iowa.
Among Miller’s influences are the Russian avant-garde artists of the turn of
the 20th century. Her poems are as sculptural as the page permits, written
in “packets” rather than stanzas that move visually as well as narratively
throughout the work.
“Delicate and sure, spare and very, very precise,” is how Cole Swensen
describes
Miller’s poems. “They haunt. They break your heart. They make you want to
live. ‘Oriflamme’ marks a new direction in American poetry. No one else is
doing anything like it, yet.”
Miller was born in Virginia and completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in
women’s studies at the University of Washington in Seattle. She received a
master’s in early cinema from the University of Chicago and a Master of Fine
Arts in poetry from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Her poems and criticism have
been published in numerous literary journals and anthologies, and she was
featured as an emerging writer in the Academy of American Poets’ publication
“American Poet” in 2004. She is the recipient of the Paul Engle–James
Michener Fellowship for 2004–2005.
“Oriflamme” is the 68th book from Ahsahta Press. Ahsahta, which is Mandan
for “Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep,” has produced volumes by poets such as
Graham Foust, Linda Dyer, Noah Eli Gordon, Dan Beachy-Quick, Lisa Fishman,
Lance Phillips, Heather Sellers, Sandra Alcosser, David Baker, Linda Bierds
and Wyn Cooper.
The books are available from the Boise State University Bookstore; Small
Press Distribution in Berkeley, Calif.; and from Ahsahta’s Web site at
