News Release March 16, 2005 Boise State Students Make Donation To Wilder Food Pantry The Organization of Student Social Workers at Boise State University will present at least 15 boxes of food and $640 to the Calvary Holiness Church pantry at noon on Saturday, March 19 in Wilder. The OSSW partnered with several other student and community organizations during the week of March 12-18 to collect food for Latino farm workers in Wilder. Food barrels were set up around campus to collect staples such as rice and beans, and the money is from tips students received while working at concession stands at Taco Bell Arena. Latino farm workers, who earn an average of $7,000-$10,000 per year, are particularly vulnerable at this time of year due to lack of fieldwork, making it difficult for families to meet basic needs. A 2004 report by the Idaho Department of Education shows that more than 97 percent of students in Wilder’s elementary school quality for free or reduced lunches, highlighting the difficulties that confront the community. Organizations represented at the presentation will include Si Se Puede, Mujeres Unidas, Idaho Migrant Council, Idaho Foodbank, Idaho Community Action Network, Wilder School District, Wilder Mayor’s Office and Boise State University.
