Bishop Kelly Claims Varsity 'JETS' Engineering Title At Boise State

Bishop Kelly High School captured the varsity championship title at the southwest Idaho JETS TEAMS (Junior Engineering Technical Society, Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science) competition held at Boise State University on March 12. Meridian Charter School won the junior varsity division.

Students from 21 area high schools flexed their intellectual muscles to solve science and engineering problems, competing in teams of eight members. The annual event was hosted by the Boise State College of Engineering.

The Bishop Kelly A-team took first place in the varsity division with 58 out of a possible 80 points. Team members were Peter Privon, Frank Fazzio, Amanda Jaszkowski, Shaun Flerchinger, Nertila Bregaj, Andrew Langfield, Tom Bleymaier and Brian Lantz. Their coach was Larry Neznanski.

The Timberline High School B-team finished second with 55 points. Team members were Zagid Abatchev, Pavel Chtchetov, John Malamakal, Zeke Schellburg, Eric Johnson, Jason Lindstrom, Peter Ashworth and Michael McNeill. Their coach was Greg Antonini.

In the junior varsity competition the Meridian Charter School A-team of Charles Burnell, Robert Carlson, Jason Denizac, Kevin Hardegree-Ullma, David Meyer, Alan Price, Samantha Renfrow and Tyler Tolman took first place with 40 out of 80 points. Paul K. Fischer coached the team and Mukesh Patel was the engineering tutor.

Borah High School A-team and Nampa High School tied for second place in the junior varsity contest with each team receiving 28 points. The Borah team included Jason Svir, Eli Fender, Spencer Oldemeyer, Christina Sloan, Nancy Pham, Nick Shoebridge, Stephanie German and Kristy Marks, coached by Vic Hofstetter. The Nampa team included Jessica Foreman, Chris Coggburn, Andrew Hansen, Colin Redifer, Todd Hamrich, Jenica Miller, Meghan Weaver and Connor Smith. The coach was Jim Kusterer.

The competition is part of a national academic program that helps prepare students for potential careers in engineering and the sciences. Problems cover mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, visual interpretation of information, computer applications and reading analysis and interpretation.
