Boise State Inducts Founders' Leadership Society
Members
The following 2005 Boise State University graduates will be inducted into
the 2005 class of the Founders� Leadership Society on Wednesday, April 6.
Society members are invited to meet annually for learning and networking
opportunities. Criteria for the award include leadership skills, commitment
to service, an appreciation for diversity and academic achievement.
The Society was established to recognize graduating students for their
outstanding leadership involvement, both on campus and in the community.
Induction into the prestigious society will provide students with
opportunities to mentor other students and to participate in meaningful
activities to enhance their personal and professional leadership growth
beyond graduation.
Maria Isabel Aguilar is a bilingual education major from Payette. A 2001
graduate of Payette High School, she is the daughter of Rogelio and Elvira
Aguilar. Aguilar was a 2003 youth leader for United Vision for Idaho, a
2003-04 McNair Scholar and earned several scholarships, including the CMEO
First Generation Award, Jensen Minority/Migrant Scholarship, Frances Woods
Education Scholarship and an Image of Idaho general scholarship. Aguilar
teaches a beginning English class for non-native speakers, and volunteers
for the Latino Vote Project.
Mindy Bennett is an exercise science major from Arvada, Colo. A 2001
graduate of Arvada High School, she is the daughter of Bill and Amy Bennett.
A BSU volleyball player, Bennett coaches the Idaho Elite Volleyball Club and
is an intern for BSU�s biomechanics lab in the Center for Orthopaedic and
Biomechanics Research. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Golden Key honor
societies and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and was named to
the WAC All-Academic Team as a freshman, and again from 2002-2004.
Nichole Billetz Moos is an early childhood studies major from Post Falls. A
2001 graduate of Post Falls High School, she is the daughter of John and
Julie Billetz. A member of the Honors College, she is the recipient of
several scholarships and is a BSU Ambassador, a student member of the Idaho
Education Association and a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Golden Key honor
societies, the Women�s Center Advisory Board and BSU�s student leadership
program committee. She is currently employed in the office of the vice
president for student affairs.
Terri Blackburn is a nursing major from Nampa. A 1975 graduate of Pocatello
High School, she is the daughter of Milt and Oudean Holmes of Nampa. An
employee of St. Luke�s Regional Medical Center, Blackburn is a member of
Sigma Theta Tau and was the 2002 sophomore student of the year for the
Nursing Department. She is a coordinator for the Nursing Department�s
pinning committee and is a team leader for the Community Assessment Project.
Blackburn is also a volunteer for several community organizations, including
Boy Scouts of America, Nampa Care House and a Treasure Valley mental health
day center.
Chris Carr is a political science major from Reno, Nev. A 2001 graduate of
McQueen High School, he is the son of Kathy Carr. Carr was named to the WAC
All-Academic football team from 2002-2004, was an honorable mention for the
2004 All-WAC team and was a District VII Regional All-Academic team member.
He was also WAC player of the week five times. Carr has done volunteer work
for the Make a Wish Foundation and organized weekly Bible study groups to
reach out to other Boise State athletes.
David Collinge, a Spanish major, studied at La Universidad del Pa�s Vasco in
San Sebastian, Spain, in 2003-04. A member of the Honors Student
Association, he received the Horsely Scholarship of Academic Excellence,
Ansotegui-Fereday Basque Studies Scholarship and the Brian Berquist Memorial
Scholarship. Collinge was a participant and organizer for the English 123
Conference on Language in 2004 and organizer for the university�s Martin
Luther King Jr. Human Rights Celebration for the past four years.
Melody Sky Eisler is a BFA visual arts major from Boise. A 1998 home school
graduate, she is the daughter of Michelle Eisler of Boise and Edward Eby of
Jemez Springs, N.M. Eisler received a 2005 Undergraduate Research and
Creative Activities Award and was awarded several scholarships, including
two study abroad scholarships, and the Ada Hatch Scholarship. Internships
included the Boise Art Museum, TVTV and the Snake River Alliance and she is
currently employed as the assistant public arts manager for the Boise City
Arts Commission.
Kesler Ernest is a master of public administration student from Boise. She
is a member of Pi Alpha Alpha Honor Society and Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Society
and was awarded the Carl P. Burke Endowed Scholarship for 2004-05. Ernest is
a member of BSU�S Gender Studies advisory board, the Boise School District
Parent/Community advisory council and steering committee and the Idaho
Women�s Network board of directors. She is also a mentor for the Returning
Women�s Mentoring Program through the Women�s Center. She is employed by
Boise State University.
Kara Fink is an international business major with minors in German and
marketing. A 2001 graduate of Centennial High School in Boise, Fink is a
member of the Honors College, the Student Alumni Association, the Boise
State Ambassadors, the Honors Student Association and the Boise State Vocal
Jazz Ensemble. The recipient of several scholarships, she has studied
overseas in Thailand in 2004 and Germany in 2003. She is the former director
of the Boise State Volunteer Services Board and is an active volunteer in
the Boise community.
Heather Gribble is a graphic design major with a marketing minor. A 2000
graduate of Bishop Kelly High School, she is the daughter of Dennis and
Vicki Gribble of Boise. The director of Boise State�s Volunteer Services
Board, Gribble was named a USA Today All USA Academic Collegiate Honorable
Mention earlier this spring. A 4.0 GPA student, Gribble has been named to
the dean�s list with highest honors every semester. She is a member of Boise
State�s Honors College, the Golden Key National Honor Society, National
Society of Collegiate Scholars and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. An
involved student leader, she co-taught a leadership course in fall 2004.
Tammura Hargrove is a nursing major, vice president of the BSU Student
Nurse�s Association and nominations and elections committee member for the
national Student Nurse�s Association. Active in the community, she is a
leader for Girl Scouts, 4-H and a Treasure Valley soccer club. Hargrove was
named nursing student of the year in 2004 and was awarded the VALOR, E&A
Palmatier, Nagel Foundation and Florence Whipple scholarships.
Robin Jensen is a social work major from Boise. She is currently serving an
internship with the El-Ada CAP program, where she helped coordinate a
homeless vigil. An active volunteer, she has participated in Rake up Boise,
the United Way Tree Top Project, the Salvation Army�s annual baby shower and
as a volunteer activity assistant at Capitol Care Center. She recently
participated in the International Justice Mission�s public awareness project
and coordinated a holiday event for the Agency for New Americans.
Thomas Labrecque is a junior majoring in marketing from Berlin, N.H. He was
named 2000 Airman of the Year at Mountain Home Air Force Base, earned the
National Defense Service Medal and has been named to the dean�s list with
high or highest honors multiple times. Labrecque was vice president of the
Associated Students of Boise State University for 2004-05, vice president
and founding father of Idaho Beta Colony, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and vice
president of business affairs for Alpha Kappa Psi, the professional business
fraternity. He has also served as president of Airmen Against Drunk Driving
and as a volunteer for events such as Paint the Town, Adopt-a-Highway, Komen
Race for the Cure and Rake up Boise.
Kimberly Markowski is a psychology major from Rigby. A 1992 graduate of
Rigby High School, she is the daughter of Dean and Vickie Turnblom. A
research assistant and teaching assistant, she won an award for outstanding
undergraduate research in 2003. Markowski is president of the Boise State
chapter of Psi Chi Honor Society, a member of Golden Key and Collegiate
Scholars honor societies and has been a participant in Leadership Quest. She
also volunteers as a CASA guardian at litem, advocating for children in
foster care.
Daniel Pauly is a secondary education, history, major. A 1998 graduate of
Meridian High School, he is the son of Paul and LaRae Pauly of Boise. He has
been named to the dean�s list with highest honors for four years and to the
national dean�s list. Active in the Latter-day Saint Student Association, he
is also a Boy Scout Leader and Sunday School president. From 1999-2001 he
served a church mission in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Pauly is an associate
justice for the Associated Students of Boise State University and a new
employee mentor for Electronic Data Systems.
Sarah Reyes is a social work major with an emphasis in criminal justice. A
1995 graduate of Valley Christian Academy, she is the daughter of Mike and
Dianne Carnell of Boise. Reyes received the 2005 Leadership Quest Director�s
Award and a 2003 Award of Recognition for contributions to the BSU Cultural
Center. She is a member of the BSU Cultural and Ethnic Diversity Board, the
Cultural Center Advisory Board and created a student petition to require BSU
to adopt a diversity cluster requirement. A member of the Social Work Honor
Society, she is an intern for Ada County Juvenile Court Services.
Beck Roghaar is a marketing major from Ogden, Utah. A 2001 graduate of Ogden
High School, he is the son of Brad and Sharon Roghaar. Captain of the BSU
men�s tennis team, he was named to the All-WAC Academic team for 2002-2004,
received the WAC Scholar Athlete Award in 2002 and 2004 and the ITA Scholar
Athlete Award from 2001-2004, and was on the dean�s list with high honors in
2002 and 2003. He was also named the Most Inspirational Player of the Year
for men�s tennis in 2004. Roghaar organized National Athlete Day activities,
participated in school visits and clinics and volunteered at McKay Dee
Hospital in Ogden.
Irene Ruiz is a Spanish major from Hazelton. A 1996 graduate of Valley High
School, she is the daughter of Gerardo and Alicia Ruiz of Micho�can, Mexico.
A McNair Scholar, Ruiz is a member of the Organizaci�n de Estudiantes
Latinos Americanos and participated in Leadership Quest in 2003 and Latino
Vote Idaho in 2002. She is a teacher�s aide at the BSU Children�s Center and
a volunteer for Mirando Adelante and the Cultural Center mentoring program.
Kelsey Ruiz is a French and Spanish major from Corvallis, Ore. A 2001
graduate of Crescent Valley High School, he is the son of Mike and Tami
Anderson. A two-time recipient of the Robertson French Scholarship, he has
also served as secretary of the BSU French Club. Employed by Home Depot, he
has also worked as an assistant resident director, a fitness instructor and
summer conference administrator. A peer leader, Ruiz was a delegate to
Leadershape, a national leadership conference, and NACURH, a national
residence hall association conference. He is a member of the National
Society of Collegiate Scholars.
Kristen Salo is a general business management and human resources major. A
recipient of several scholarships, she is a member of Alpha Kappa Psi and
the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Salo is a program assistant for
Student Activities at Boise State, working on events such as Finals Relief,
Homecoming and the Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Celebration. She is a
former director of Student Programs Board, a delegate to Leadershape
Institute, a member of the Student Union Board of Governors and a member of
the Student Alumni Association.
Echo Savage, an English major, served as editor on the board of directors
for Emmett Community Playhouse. President of Sigma Tau Delta�s BSU chapter,
she was named the chapter�s outstanding junior in 2003. She is also a member
of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Savage serves as editor of
�The Zine,� a campus Writing Center publication, and was a contributing
writer for Diversity Magazine in fall 2004. She also served as a liaison to
the chairs of the colleges of Business and Economics and Applied Technology
for the 2003 diversity requirement proposal.
Carly Schneider is a health sciences studies major from Kimberly. A 2001
Kimberly High School graduate, she is the daughter of Rich and Cheri
Schneider. She has been the recipient of the Brown Honors Scholarship,
College of Health Sciences scholarship and the Volunteer Services Board
Director�s Choice Award. Schneider is a Boise State Ambassador, vice
president of the Honors Student Association and treasurer of the Student
Alumni Association. She has volunteered for several agencies, including St.
Luke�s and Saint Alphonsus regional medical centers, La Buena Salud, Rake up
Boise and Habitat for Humanity.
Heather Strempke-Durgin is an English major with an emphasis on literature.
A 1999 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School in Iowa, she is the daughter of
Shawn and Terri Durgin of Lisbon, Iowa. She volunteers with Boise Group
Homes, accompanying developmentally disabled adults to community events, and
is a mentor for the BSU Women�s Center, where she works as an office
assistant. Strempke-Durgin received the Gem Scholarship in 2003 and 2004.
Justin Terry is a communication major and a reporter for NPR News 91. He has
worked as a tutor and teaching assistant for the Communication Department
and served as chairman of the BSU Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights
Committee for two years and as a member of the BSU Leadership Committee. In
2003 he earned a Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence
national award; he has also earned several awards from the Idaho Press Club.
He is a board member for the Idaho Human Rights Education Center and a
volunteer for 4-H, Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life, Idaho Rivers United
and more.
Joyce Ward is an economics and operations management major with a Latin
language and literature minor. A 1966 graduate of Federal Way High School in
Washington, she is the daughter of Marvin Eidinger Sr. of Tacoma and
Florence Carlo of Seattle. A member of Beta Gamma Sigma, Ward received a
Micron Scholarship twice and the Len B. and Grace Jordan Economic
Scholarship and was listed six times on the dean�s list with highest honors.
Judy Wayne is a mechanical engineering major. A 1999 graduate of Boise High
School, she is the daughter of Barbara Wayne of Boise and Dale Wayne of
Fruitland. Wayne is an adjunct professor of physics and also works as an
active learning coordinator for mathematics. In 2003, she was a summer BRIN
fellow. A member of the Boise State Honor Society for four years, she has
been on the dean�s list with honors three times and was nominated as a
Collegiate All-American Scholar four times. She entered Boise State on a
four-year Science Competition Day Scholarship and was also a Brown Honors
Scholar. She is currently membership chair for the Mechanical Engineering
Society.
Tara Zirker is a political science major from Idaho Falls. A 1999 home
school graduate, she is the daughter of Larry and Margie Zirker. An intern
for state Rep. Margaret Henbest, Zirker is also statewide coordinator for
the Idaho Progressive Student Alliance and marketing coordinator for the
International Programs Office at Boise State. She studies at Budapest
Technical University in Hungary in spring 2003 and has visited 15 countries.
She is involved in YMCA�s youth government and has volunteered for
Alternative Spring Break, Habitat for Humanity, Boise Rescue Mission, Red
Cross of Idaho and other organizations. She was inducted into the ASBSU Hall
of Fame in 2003 for her work with the Volunteer Services Board.
