Boise State Calls On Students To 'Raise Your Voice'

Several Boise State University organizations will celebrate Raise Your Voice Month from April 1-May 10. The Raise Your Voice Campaign is a month-long national effort to encourage students to speak out on issues important to their future and to increase their involvement in public life.

The Raise Your Voice effort is a campaign under Campus Compact, a national coalition of more than 900 college and university presidents. The Boise State campaign is sponsored by the Volunteer Services Board with additional support and programming from the Student Programs Board, ASBSU and the Cultural Center. Events include the following:

Hunger/Homeless Grab Bag and Movies
7 p.m. Friday, April 1, Cultural Center.
The Volunteer Services Board will present two movies that relate hunger and homelessness on a global scale. The presentation will feature an interactive grab bag activity to understand how homelessness could happen to anyone. Tsunami Blanket Drive
April 1-15.
Join the Volunteer Services Board in collecting blankets for the children victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. Drop off locations include the Cultural Center, the Student Union, the Info Desk and the VSB Office. Presented by the Volunteer Services Board.

These Hands Don’t Hurt
April 4-7, on the Quad.
These Hands Don’t Hurt is an effort to raise awareness, educate and raise money to combat domestic violence. A promise wall will be on display where, for a donation, individuals may trace their hands as a pledge that they will not be used to harm another person. Presented by Alpha Kappa Lambda.

Ice Cream Social of Diversity
Noon-2 p.m. Thursday, April 7, on the Quad.
Join campus religious organizations in an ice cream social to increase unity and collaboration.

Shack City
1 p.m.-overnight Friday, April 8, on the Quad.
Join the Volunteer Services Board in understanding the plight of the homeless by spending the night on the quad in cardboard boxes.

Service Saturday
8:45 a.m. Saturday, April 9, Student Union Brava! Stage.
Join the Volunteer Services Board in serving the community by picking from one of many pre-arranged projects that help deal with hunger/homelessness, youth and education, healthcare, the environment and animals.

National Youth Service Week
Various times and locations, April 10-15.
Look for events throughout the week from the Volunteer Services Board as a way to acknowledge and understand issues concerning today’s youth.

Face Off X
7 p.m.-1 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, Student Union Ballroom D.
8 bands. 2 stages. 4 hours. Local rock ‘n’ roll and alternative music all night! Donations accepted to aid tsunami relief. Presented by the Student Programs Board.

Four Square Tournament to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital
Time TBA, Friday, April 15, Student Union Building; Saturday, April 16 at the East Stadium Parking Lot.
Join the Volunteer Services Board in a letter writing campaign to raise funds for the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. The campaign involves forming teams of four to participate in an old-school four square tournament. Snack packs included.

Earth Week
Various times and locations, April 18-22.
Look for events throughout the week from the Volunteer Services Board as a way to acknowledge and understand today’s environmental and animal issues. Presented by the Volunteer Services Board.

Diverse Perspectives Film Series: “Last Letter”
5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, Student Union Lookout Room.
In 1941, a Russian Jewish doctor wrote a last letter to her son after her town was seized by the Germans. The letter’s detailed observations of daily life in the ghetto reveals the fear, courage, frailty, compassion and dignity of this woman as she reflects on her Jewish heritage, reviews her life, and faces her death. Presented by Student Union and Activities.

Red Cross Blood Drive
Time TBA, Monday, April 25, Student Union Jordan Ballroom.
Do your part by volunteering to give blood with the Volunteer Services Board and the American Red Cross. Sign up to donate by contacting Zoe at 426-4240 or stop by the Jordan Ballroom the day of the event.

An Evening with Kathy Kelly
7 p.m. Friday, April 29, Special Events Center.
Kathy Kelly is an international peace activist, champion of human rights, and founder of Voices in the Wilderness. She spent time in prison for crossing the line at Project ELF, a U.S. Navy nuclear weapon facility in northern Wisconsin that helped fast track the Tomahawk Cruise missiles used during the Shock and Awe campaign in Iraq. Presented by the Women’s Center.

Community Dinner
5 p.m. Sunday, May 8, Student Union Hatch Ballroom.
An opportunity for Boise State students and community members to relax, enjoy great food and meet other members of the community while serving the less fortunate. Volunteers are welcome; contact Sarah at 426-4240. Presented by the Volunteer Services Board.
