BOISE STATE ANNOUNCES GENE HARRIS JAZZ FESTIVAL WINNERS

 

About 1,000 students from throughout the Northwest participated in the 2005 Gene Harris Jazz Festival student clinics and competitions on April 8 and 9. The winners were selected by a panel of professional adjudicators. The results were as follows:

Best junior high band overall and intermediate winner:

North Junior High School, Director Todd Sprague


Best junior high band novice:

Nampa West Middle School, Director Ted Carrico


Best junior high band advanced:

River Glen Elementary School, Director Karen Danley


Best high school band overall and intermediate winner:

Wenatchee High School, Director Jim Kovach


Best high school band novice:

Nampa High School No. 3, Director Tom Stone


Best high school band advanced:

Borah High School, Director Kevin Sullivan


Best high school band heavyweight:

Centennial High School, Director Phil Hartman

In addition to the overall winners, the top bands and soloists each day were selected to perform Friday or Saturday evening before the main concerts in the Bank of America Centre. The winners were:
 

Friday, April 8
Junior high school: North Junior High, Boise, Director Todd Sprague
High school: Nampa High School No. 2, Director Tom Stone
Soloists: Chris Cornelison, bass, Nampa High School No. 2; Noe Martinez, saxophone, Nampa High School No. 1 and 2; Grady Turner, trumpet, Nampa West Middle School; Jody Turner, trombone, Nampa High School No. 2; Lake Meade, drums, Eagle High School; Megan Meade, piano, Eagle High School.

Saturday, April 9
Combo: Capital High School Trio, Director Marty Worthington
High school: Centennial High School, Director Phil Hartman
Soloists: Brian Levell, alto saxophone, Centennial High School; Josh Vargas, piano, Borah High School; Greg Jans, drums, Wenatchee High School; Owen Maggelson, guitar, Wenatchee High School; and Troy Ferguson, bass, Capital High School.

The Gene Harris Jazz Festival included two days of student competitions, three evening concerts and a Sunday gospel concert featuring some of the top names in jazz. For more information, visit www.geneharris.org.
