Boise State Student Recreation Center
Receives NIRSA Outstanding Sports Facility Award
The Boise State Student Recreation Center was one of six winners nationwide
honored by the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA)
with the Outstanding Indoor and Outdoor Sports Facility Award at the annual
NIRSA conference April 7 in Orlando, Fla.
Each year NIRSA designates exceptional new and recently renovated facilities
in the nation as Outstanding Sports Facilities. The selection committee
judges each facility based on information submitted by the institutions. The
determining factor in the selection of winners is whether the project can be
considered a standard or model for which other facilities should be measured
and from which they could benefit. School size and funding are not
considered factors.
The $12 million, 90,000-square-foot Student Recreation Center features a
three-court gym, 1/11-mile walking/jogging track, climbing wall, outdoor
rental center, group exercise rooms, racquetball courts and strength
training rooms. The center, which opened in 2002, logs 201,000 visitors
annually. The center is open to students, faculty, staff and alumni, and
their families.
“This award serves as a testament to the students of Boise State, who, over
a period of seven years provided the vision, thought and financing to create
such a beautiful facility,” said Joyce Grimes, executive director of Campus
Recreation.
