Boise State University Receives Federal Grant To
Help Establish Basque Studies Minor Boise State
University has been awarded a $158,589 U.S. Department of Education grant to
help establish a Basque Studies minor. The minor would provide an academic
and research umbrella for the Basque community in Boise and the region. Earlier this
month, the Idaho State Board of Education approved Boise State’s plans to
establish the program. The federal funding will be used to hire a Basque
language and culture specialist and to provide stipends to faculty at Boise
State University to develop courses or increased course content for the
interdisciplinary minor, according to Sabine Klahr, director of
International Programs at Boise State. The two-year grant will also be used
to host a Basque Studies conference at Boise State and to develop a Web site
for the program. Last fall, the
university received a $150,000 grant from the Basque government to develop
the minor, which brings the total funding for the Basque Studies program at
Boise State to $308,589. Creating the interdisciplinary Basque Studies minor is a collaborative effort between Boise State’s Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, Department of History and the International Programs Office as well as the Cenarrusa Center for Basque Studies in Boise.
