President's Writing Awards Honors 10 Students

 

Ten students will be honored with President’s Writing Awards at 4 p.m. April 27 in the Hemingway Center. President Bob Kustra will personally hand out the awards to the recipients.

 

The contest, which is directed by the English Department, recognizes superior writing in the following categories: critical analysis, ethnography, opinion, personal essay, research-based and technical communication. There were no entries this year for the technical communication portion of the contest.

 

The first-place winner in each category wins $130, and the second-place winner receives $60. This year’s winners are:

Critical Analysis: First place, Christy Claymore for From Blisters to Stars: The Search for Native Identity in Diane Glancy’s ‘Aunt Parnetta’s Electric Blisters.’ Second place, Nancy Henke for Paradox of Principles: Marxism and Russell Banks’ Trailerpark.

 

• Ethnography: First place, Adrienne Evans for Portrait of a Queen. Second place, Jayson Martindale for Video Gamers.

 

• Opinion: First place, Markos T. Marzouca for For the Children. Second place, Emily Matta for Emily Elizabeth Dickinson.
 

• Personal essay: First place, Anna L. MacDonagh for From Home. Second place, Jennifer Casey for The Inner Weight of Woe.

 

• Research-Based: First place, Brandon Chaffin for Impact Characteristics of Soccer Balls. Second place, Olivia Fink for Yudayajin: Japanese Attitudes Toward the Jews from 1920-1941.
