News Release April 25, 2005 Communication 101 “Speech Showcase” at Boise State April 27
The Boise State University Department of
Communication hosts the semi-annual Communication 101 Speech Showcase at 7
p.m. Wednesday, April 27, in the Student Union Jordan Ballroom. The event is
free and open to the public.
Eight finalists from preliminary rounds
of judging, representative of about 1,000 Communication 101 students, will
each present an eight-minute speech to compete for more than $500 in prize
money to be awarded by a panel of six distinguished judges. Rob Perez, a
senior vice president for U.S. Bank and major underwriter for the event,
will present the awards. Communication professor Marty Most, coach of the
award-winning Talkin’ Broncos debate and speech team, will emcee the
program.
During the judges’ deliberations, names
of interested Communication 101 students will be placed in a hat and five
speakers will be drawn to give impromptu speeches. A separate panel of
judges will evaluate the impromptu round and the winning student will
receive a $25 award.
The goals of the department in sponsoring
this event are to motivate speakers to aspire to examples of speech
excellence, and to celebrate successful communication in the public sphere.
